Generators 101: What You Need To Know

Have you ever found yourself in the dark during a power outage, wishing you had a magic wand to bring back the lights, the warmth of your heater, or the cool breeze of your air conditioner?

If you’re nodding along, then it’s high time we talk about a real-life magic wand for your home: generators.

But not just any generators—let’s dive into what makes a generator essential, especially in places known for their capricious weather like Colleyville, TX, Grapevine, TX, and Southlake, TX.

The Heartbeat of Your Home During an Outage

Generators: the unsung heroes during storms, blackouts, and unexpected power failures.

They come in various sizes, from small, portable models ideal for camping trips to large, standby units that automatically power your home during outages.

But how do they work?

In essence, a generator converts mechanical energy from an external source into electrical energy as output.

Ensuring that your home stays lit, warm, or cool, depending on your needs.

Types of Generators: Finding Your Perfect Match

Broadly speaking, there are three main types of generators: portable, inverter, and standby.

Portable generators are your go-to for temporary, movable power needs, perfect for that backyard party or as a backup for essential appliances.

Inverter generators offer a more sophisticated technology that provides cleaner energy for your delicate devices like laptops and TVs.

Making them ideal for both outdoor adventures and as a quiet, efficient home backup.

Lastly, standby generators are the guardians of your home, automatically powering on when the electricity goes out, and turning off when it’s restored, providing seamless protection for your entire house.

Why Are Generators Essential?

Imagine waking up in the middle of a chilly winter night in Grapevine, TX, to find your heating system dead as a doornail because of a power outage.

Or picture yourself running a home business in Southlake, TX, and experiencing a blackout right before a crucial deadline.

These scenarios are not just inconvenient; they can be downright dangerous or costly.

Generators act as a safety net, ensuring that your life continues smoothly, without interruption, regardless of what Mother Nature or the grid decides to throw your way.

Choosing The Right Generators For Your Home

In the heart of Texas, where the sun blazes like nowhere else and the weather dances to its own unpredictable tune, the folks in Colleyville, Grapevine, and Southlake know too well the importance of being prepared.

Whether it’s the sudden summer storms that roll in with gusto or the occasional ice storm in winter, one thing is certain: power outages can and do happen.

And when they do, it’s not just about the inconvenience of missing your favorite TV show.

It’s about keeping your home safe and your family comfortable.

Why Generators Are a Household Necessity

Let’s face it, the idea of shopping for generators might not spark joy.

For many, it falls into the same category as insurance – you don’t think about it until you need it.

But just like insurance, when that need arises, you’ll be thanking your lucky stars you were prepared.

Imagine sitting back, relaxed, while the neighbors are scrambling for candles.

That’s the peace of mind generators bring.

Factors to Consider When Selecting Your Guardian Angel

The Size Matters

When it comes to generators, size does matter.

But bigger isn’t always better. It’s about finding the right fit for your home.

Consider what essentials you need to keep running during an outage.

Is it just the fridge and a few lights?

Or does your Texas-size home require a bit more juice to keep everything from the air conditioning to the home office up and running?

Location, Location, Location

Our friends in Colleyville, TX, Grapevine, TX, and Southlake, TX, live in areas that might as well be dubbed ‘Generator Country’.

With weather that can go from zero to sixty in the blink of an eye, choosing generators that can withstand the elements is key.

Not to mention, considering local noise ordinances and ensuring your generators don’t become a neighborhood nuisance is equally important.

Fuel for Thought

What’s going to power your power source?

Generators run on various fuels, from gasoline to natural gas to solar power.

Each has its pros and cons, from availability during a disaster to the ongoing cost and environmental impact.

The Buffalo Electric Stamp of Approval

Regular check-ups, especially before the storm season hits, can make all the difference.

At Buffalo Electric, we offer maintenance packages that keep your generator in tip-top condition, ready at a moment’s notice.

Expert Tips: Maintaining Your Home’s Electrical System

Have you ever found yourself puzzled over the flickering lights in your living room, wondering if it’s just the bulb’s way of saying goodbye or a sneak peek into a larger, lurking electrical issue?

If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone.

Many homeowners in Colleyville, TX, Grapevine, TX, and Southlake, TX grapple with similar electrical conundrums.

This is where Buffalo Electric shines, offering not just solutions but also preventative advice to keep your home safe and your electricity running smoothly.

Understanding the Basics

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let’s establish a foundation.

Your home’s electrical system is like the circulatory system of your body: essential, complex, and not to be tampered with unless you know what you’re doing.

Regular maintenance and safety checks are the electrical equivalent of eating right and exercising.

It keeps everything running as it should and heads off problems before they escalate.

Regular Maintenance Checks: The Heartbeat of Your Home

  1. Inspect and Respect Your Electrical Panel

Think of your electrical panel as mission control. It’s crucial to ensure it’s properly labeled and free from any obstruction. A cluttered electrical panel isn’t just an eyesore; it’s a hazard.

  1. Keep an Eye on Outlets and Switches

If you notice any discoloration, heat, or buzzing sounds from outlets or switches, it’s time to call in the pros. These are tell-tale signs of electrical issues that, if ignored, can escalate quickly.

  1. Test Your Safety Devices Regularly

Your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are your first line of defense in an emergency. Testing them monthly and replacing batteries annually is a small task with potentially life-saving outcomes.

Energy Efficiency And Your Electrical System

Ever glanced at your electricity bill and wondered where all that energy went? You’re not alone.

In areas like Colleyville, TX, Grapevine, TX, and Southlake, TX, where the summer heat can drive up your AC usage, and the occasional storm leaves you relying on backup power.

Optimizing your home’s energy efficiency isn’t just nice to have—it’s a necessity.

The Power of Efficiency

The journey toward energy efficiency in your home starts with understanding your electrical system and recognizing the opportunities for improvement.

It’s about making smart choices that reduce your energy consumption without sacrificing comfort.

Think of it as getting the most bang for your buck, or in this case, the most light for your kWh.

Why Generators Matter in This Equation

Generators, while often thought of as emergency equipment, play a vital role in energy management.

Choosing the right generator can mean the difference between power that’s there when you need it and power that’s efficient and environmentally friendly.

Buffalo Electric specializes in providing generators that not only serve as reliable backup power but also integrate seamlessly into your home’s energy efficiency goals.

Steps to Optimizing Your Electrical Usage

Audit Your Energy Use: Identify where your home uses the most energy. Is it heating and cooling? Lighting? Appliances?

Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances: If your generator powers appliances during an outage, ensure they are energy-efficient models.

Consider a Smart Thermostat: These devices can dramatically reduce heating and cooling costs, even when running on generator power.

LED Lighting: Switching to LED lighting reduces the load on your generator and decreases your energy consumption.

Routine Maintenance: Keeping both your electrical system and your generator in top condition ensures efficiency and longevity.

By focusing on these steps, you’re not just saving on your next utility bill; you’re preparing your home for the unexpected in the most efficient way possible.

And that’s where Buffalo Electric shines.

We don’t just install generators; we integrate them into your home’s energy strategy.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of Electrical Code Compliance for your home or business?

A Tale Of Two Electrical Services

Once upon a time, in the bustling suburbs of Colleyville, TX, lived a homeowner named Alex.

Alex’s home was his castle, a place of comfort and safety, until one fateful evening when the lights flickered and darkness enveloped his abode.

In urgent need of an electrical repair, Alex did what many do in times of crisis—he searched for the quickest, cheapest fix.

Enter “QuickFix Electrics,” a company that promised the world but delivered an atlas of problems.

The QuickFix technician arrived late, his tools clattering in a worn-out box, and his assurance as shaky as the flickering lights.

Hours passed, filled with the sounds of sighs and the scent of burnt wires.

When the technician finally declared victory over the darkness, Alex’s relief was palpable.

But as the door closed behind the departing “savior,” the lights dimmed once more, leaving Alex in a gloom that was more than just physical.

The repair was not just poorly executed; it was a band-aid on a bullet wound.

First Impressions Matter: The Buffalo Electric Welcome

Ever heard the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”?

Well, let me tell you, when Alex dialed up Buffalo Electric, it wasn’t just a call; it was the beginning of a whole new chapter in electrical service experience.

Picture this: after a day that felt more like a roller coaster ride in the dark, thanks to a previous botched job by a now-nameless company, Alex was on edge.

The flickering lights and the ominous silence of the non-working appliances were like the eerie quiet before a storm. Enough was enough.

The Call That Lit Up the Room

So, there Alex was, phone in hand, skepticism in heart, dialing Buffalo Electric’s number.

The voice that greeted Alex on the other end? Oh, it was like a lighthouse beacon in a tempest-tossed sea.

Professional, warm, with a hint of “we’ve got this,” that immediately set a tone of reassurance.

A Symphony of Service

But it wasn’t just the tone that made Alex sit up a tad straighter; it was the symphony of service that followed.

Questions were asked, not just the run-of-the-mill “What’s your problem?” but the “Let’s get to the heart of this” kind.

It was clear; this wasn’t Buffalo Electric’s first rodeo. They were in it to fix it, and fix it right.

The Buffalo Electric Difference

What set this apart wasn’t just the absence of canned responses or the dreaded hold music that seems to be a staple in service calls.

No, sir. It was the genuine vibe of wanting to help, the assurance that Alex’s electrical woes were as important to Buffalo Electric as they were to Alex.

And let’s not forget the swift scheduling – it was like they had a superhero cape hidden somewhere, ready to swoop in and save the day.

A Glimmer of Hope

By the end of the call, the room didn’t just feel brighter because of the promise of restored lights; it was the glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, this nightmare had a hero waiting in the wings.

Buffalo Electric wasn’t just offering a service; they were offering peace of mind.

And in that moment, Alex knew that the dark days of electrical mishaps were about to get a whole lot brighter.

So, if you’re sitting there, wondering whether all electricians are cut from the same cloth, let me tell you, they’re not. Buffalo Electric?

They’re the tailor-made suit in a world of off-the-rack disappointments. And that first impression?

It’s not just a promise; it’s a preview of the exceptional service that’s about to light up your world.

If you’re looking for ways to reduce energy consumption and save money on electricity bills, outdoor lighting is a great place to start. Outdoor lighting can be functional and aesthetically pleasing but also drain excess electricity.

Fortunately, there are ways to reduce outdoor lighting energy consumption without sacrificing safety or style. Keep reading to learn how to make outdoor lighting more energy-efficient, save money, and reduce environmental impact.

Switch to LED Lights

Switching to LED lights is one of the most effective ways to reduce energy consumption with outdoor lighting. LED stands for light-emitting diode and uses a unique technology different from traditional incandescent bulbs.

LED lights use a semiconductor material that emits light when an electric current passes through it. This technology makes LED lights much more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs, which waste a lot of energy as heat.

Compared to incandescent bulbs, LED lights use at least 90 percent less energy; hence, you save up a lot in electricity bills in the long run. LED lights are also much more durable and last longer than traditional bulbs.

Switching to LED lights can also have a positive environmental impact. Since LED lights use less energy, they reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, LED lights do not contain hazardous materials such as mercury, which is present in incandescent bulbs. This means LED lights are safer for the environment and easier to dispose of.

Another benefit of LED lights is that you can select from a wide range of colors and designs, making it easy to find a lighting option that suits your outdoor space. LED lights have a dim feature that allows homeowners to adjust the brightness according to their needs.

Use Motion Sensors

Motion sensors are an effective way to reduce energy consumption in outdoor lighting. These sensors detect motion and automatically turn on the lights when someone is in the area. It means that outdoor lights are only on when needed, thus, reducing energy wastage and lowering electricity bills.

Motion sensors work through a combination of infrared and microwave sensors to detect movement. When someone enters the sensor’s field of view, the sensor sends a signal to the lighting fixture to turn on the lights.

Once the person leaves the area, the sensor signals to turn off the lights after a certain period. It means that outdoor lights are only on when there is activity, which helps to conserve energy.

Using motion sensors also has the added benefit of enhancing security. Outdoor lighting can deter potential intruders. They can increase visibility and make it more difficult for someone to approach your property unnoticed.

Motion sensors are also easy to install and utilize in various outdoor lighting applications, such as porch lights, floodlights, and pathway lights. Additionally, some motion sensors are programmable, allowing you to customize the sensitivity and duration of the sensor to meet your needs.

Install Timers

Installing timers is a practical and convenient solution to reducing energy consumption in outdoor lighting. With a timer, you can set specific times for outdoor lights to turn on and off automatically, ensuring they are only on when needed. Professional electricians can attest that this helps to reduce energy waste and lower electricity bills.

Outdoor lighting, such as landscape or pathway lighting, can be programmed using timers to turn on at dusk and off at dawn. By programming the timer to turn the lights on at sunset and off at sunrise, you can ensure that your outdoor lights are only on when needed. It helps conserve energy and reduces the need to remember to turn the lights on and off manually.

Installing a timer is relatively easy and can be done on most outdoor lighting fixtures. Many timers are also programmable, allowing you to set specific times and schedules for your outdoor lights to turn on and off. Some newer models of timers even offer wireless connectivity and can be controlled using a smartphone app.

Using timers also has the added benefit of extending the lifespan of your outdoor lights. Reducing the time your lights are on helps to extend their lifespan and reduce the need for replacement. It can save you money in the long run, as you won’t have to replace your outdoor lights as frequently.

Choose the Right Fixtures

Choosing the right fixtures reduces energy consumption. By selecting fixtures designed for energy efficiency, you can minimize energy waste and lower your electricity bills. An electrician provides expert advice on energy-efficient fixtures and ensures safe and correct installation.

One key feature to look for in energy-efficient fixtures is reflectors that direct the light where it’s needed. It ensures that the light is used effectively and not wasted by shining in the wrong direction or dissipating into the air. Many fixtures with reflectors also use LED bulbs, known for their energy efficiency and long lifespan.

When selecting fixtures for your outdoor lighting, consider the type of bulb used and its energy efficiency. LED bulbs are the most energy-efficient option.

Preventing Your Outdoor Lights From Failing Prematurely: Do You Need An Electrician‘s Intervention?

Outdoor lighting is a great way to enhance your home’s landscape and add curb appeal while increasing safety and security. But what happens when your outdoor lights fail prematurely? A malfunctioning lighting fixture can give way to several issues – from higher energy bills to safety hazards. However, did you know that most outdoor lights fail prematurely because of some common mistakes that could be easily avoided? In this blog post, we’ll outline how to prevent your outdoor lights from failing prematurely and when you should consider an electrician’s intervention.

Use Appropriate Lightbulbs

One of the most common reasons outdoor lights fail prematurely is inappropriate lightbulbs. You must use the appropriate bulbs that can withstand outdoor elements like wind, humidity, and rain. Using incandescent bulbs can be a recipe for disaster because they’re not designed for outdoor use. LED bulbs and CFLs are energy-efficient options offering long-lasting and reliable performance without generating excessive heat. LED bulbs don’t emit heat, which is an advantage, especially in outdoor lighting. Heat can cause bulbs to deteriorate faster, which is why LED bulbs last longer than incandescent bulbs. Additionally, LED bulbs are robust and highly resistant to shocks and impact.

Invest in Quality Fixtures

Investing in quality fixtures is a smart way to ensure that your outdoor lights will not fail prematurely. While it may be tempting to buy cheaper options, they often lack the durability and weather resistance necessary to withstand the elements. Quality fixtures, however, are designed with sturdier materials and more advanced technology that can help prolong their lifespan. Not only will this save you the time and hassle of constantly replacing your outdoor lights, but it can also save you money in the long run. After all, investing in quality fixtures upfront is much more cost-effective than continuously replacing cheaper options. Plus, with the bonus of energy efficiency of most high-quality light fixtures, you can save money on your energy bill while still enjoying the stunning look of your outdoor lighting.

Proper Installation

Another common mistake that homeowners make is poor installation. If you don’t have the necessary skills, expertise, or tools, then hiring a professional electrician is always better. DIY installations without the proper knowledge could lead to improper wiring or exposure to the elements, both of which can lead to the premature failure of your outdoor lights. Experienced technicians will consider important factors like the type of fixtures, wiring, and the proper placement of the lighting system. Professional installation will ensure that your outdoor lighting system is properly installed and the wiring is safe and secure, ensuring that your lighting system will operate as intended.

Maintenance

Maintenance is crucial in keeping your outdoor lights in good shape. Failure to maintain them can result in premature failure, leaving you in the dark when you need your outdoor lighting most. From replacing light bulbs, cleaning bulbs, and lenses to checking the wiring and making necessary repairs, maintaining outdoor lighting is pivotal in preventing failures. Not only does it ensure you always have a well-lit exterior, but it also saves you money in the long run by avoiding frequent replacements. If you notice any damage to the outdoor fixtures or electrical systems, have a qualified electrician repair them immediately.

Protect from the Elements

Weather patterns such as extreme heat, humidity, and wind can affect the lifespan of your outdoor light bulbs. It’s essential to protect your lights from harsh weather conditions by using weather-friendly materials and proper placement. For example, use PVC covers or high-grade glass to protect the lights’ globes from water ingress or buildup. Adequate placement will ensure you don’t put your outdoor lights in areas prone to weather damage.

Avoid Overuse

Outdoor lighting can add a beautiful touch to any home, but it’s important to remember to avoid overuse if you want your lights to shine brightly for years to come. While outdoor lights are designed to withstand the elements, using them excessively can overwhelm and cause them to fail prematurely. Additionally, overuse can lead to overheating, which can trip your circuit breaker and cause other electrical problems. It’s important to balance between enjoying your lights’ ambiance and allowing them enough time to cool down between uses.

One of the best ways of avoiding overuse is by installing timers and dimmers. Timers can automatically turn the lights on and off at specific times, reducing the need for manual operation and decreasing the chances of them being left on unnecessarily. On the other hand, Dimmers can help regulate the amount of electricity flowing to the bulbs, which can be particularly useful for incandescent lights. By using these simple tools, you can help protect your outdoor lights from premature failure and save on energy costs in the long run.

Enjoy the Benefits of Outdoor Lights Without the Worry

Have Trees In Your Yard Fallen On Electrical Cables? Reasons To Enlist An Emergency Electrician

In today’s technology and systems advancements, almost every appliance, device, and system in your home depends on electricity. As a result, homes are more comfortable, efficient, and elegant due to electricity provision. Electricity also plays a crucial role in maintaining your family’s health and well-being. However, electricity has a flip side. If not well maintained, electricity has the potential to harm those you love and obliterate your home. Therefore, it is vital to have a reliable emergency electrician to call upon when things go wrong. An electrical technician will help you install, manage, and fix your electrical gadgets to ensure the safety of your home. This article will highlight the dangers of falling trees on overhead lines and how to survive these times.

Electrical Shock

The other danger your home faces is an electrical shock from trees falling on overhead lines. Although electricity has impeccable advantages for your home, it can cause undesirable things such as electrical shock. Electricity to operate seamlessly in your home requires an electrical technician to install and regularly manage it. This is because there are principles to its connection that ensure it’s flowing as it should. If these connections are not observed, the electricity in your home will have side effects such as electric shock.

For instance, the primary purpose of an earth wire in every electrical circuit and component is to discharge the system and lead stray electrical current to the ground. Consequently, your home and electrical components are safer. However, a tree falling on an electrical line bridges the current-carrying electrical wires and the earth wire. Consequently, the tree leads electrical current in the earth wire, making it charged. If anyone in your home touches the surface of an appliance, they experience an electric shock.

If the fallen tree is wet, it becomes a conductor of electricity once it touches the electrical line. Therefore, it is a potential danger to anyone who touches it since electricity can lead to electric shock or more severe dangers depending on its intensity. Therefore, when a tree falls on the power line in your backyard, do not touch or try to move it. Contact a skilled emergency electrician to handle it. The technician has the appropriate tools, equipment, and protective clothing, such as gloves, to handle the situation safely. After removing the tree, the technician will restore conducive electricity flow to your home and ensure it is safe.

Power Outages

Power outages are the first significant side effect of trees falling on electrical wires. When a tree or its branches fall on electrical lines, the highest possibility is that your home will experience a power outage. This is because electrical conductors which supply your home with electricity are not equipped to handle heavy loads. Although the materials used in the wires may have a high tensile strength, the immediate and forceful nature of a falling tree will disconnect the wires from the poles or tear the strands of the wires. However, this depends on the force of the tree as it falls and how heavy the tree is.

Conversely, if the tree fall is close to a transformer, the tree fall might break the wire connections to the transformer resulting in a power outage in your home. Although this might seem normal, the power loss will lead to inconveniences such as a lack of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and other electricity-reliant systems in your home, like the internet. In addition, power outages result in strained emergency resources and the isolation of your home. Therefore, your family will be isolated and un-informed of what is happening in a weather warning.

Electrocution

Although trees are not good conductors of electricity, during rainstorms, the water goes through the tree, making it wet and a good conductor. Therefore, it conducts electricity, making it a disaster waiting to happen. When a member of your family comes in contact with the tree, it is like touching the naked electrical line the tree is lining. If the tree is leaning on an electrical wire and touches a pool of water in the ground, the water becomes instantly charged with electricity, which is hazardous.

If an animal or a member of your family touches the water or the tree, they face the risk of electrocution, which can lead to dire consequences such as paralysis or even death. Therefore, immediately contact an emergency electrician and a professional tree service when you notice a tree in contact with an electrical wire. Also, it is best to avoid the area since the tree might be charging other items on the ground with an electrical current.

Power Surges

When a tree falls on an electrical power line, it disrupts the normal flow of electricity to your home. This can result in excess voltage in your electrical system, damaging the electrical appliances connected to the electrical system. Additionally, power surges can lead to property damage and loss of life through electrical fires.

Fire Hazard

One of the significant side effects of electricity in any setting is its capability to cause a fire. The primary reason why an electrical circuit, system, or appliance is safe for use is that different lines, both negative and positive, carry current in different wires. When the wires combine, it is in a controlled environment.

Therefore, when the terminals of an electrical system come into contact in an uncontrolled environment, they complete the circuit and amplify the capabilities of each wire. Since the electricity flowing between the wires is too much, it can cause an electrical arc that ignites the nearby materials resulting in a fire. Therefore, contact an emergency electrician when you notice a fallen tree touching the overhead electrical wires.

Electrical Submetering: Top Reasons Why It Makes A Difference By A Certified Electrician

When building a property, there are fundamental things you must consider for your structure to be complete. For instance, a well-installed electrical system helps your home have power availability by efficiently connecting you to the electrical grid. An electrical system will also keep your home running effectively by supplying major areas with electrical power. Therefore, choosing the right electrical system components is crucial in making your home comfortable. In addition, knowing your property’s electrical needs and having a certified electrician to help you acquire them will also be helpful. This article will highlight all there is to know about submetering to help you know if they are a good fit for your home.

What is Electrical Submetering?

When looking for an electrical metering solution for your property, the market might be confusing with all the available options. However, to discern the best method well, it is vital to understand all the available options. Therefore, the best part to start is knowing what electrical metering is.

Electrical metering is a method a power provision company uses to help you measure the amount of energy your home uses per month. The utility company’s electrician installs a meter in your home that runs depending on your property’s power consumption. The technician then determines your monthly power charge. Notably, although this might be very efficient if you are an average homeowner with a single usage point, it becomes more complicated when your property has several usage points or more than one unit.

Therefore, if you are a landlord with a couple of units, traditional metering methods may not suit you because how will you charge your tenants? How will you know each person’s electricity usage if there is just one meter? Therefore, electrical submetering is the best solution for a couple of units.

In an electrical submetering system, the meter from the utility company acts as the master or main meter and measures the electricity usage of the whole property. However, the property owner installs additional meters, or submeters, on the property’s electrical system. Each meter installed is under the master but records power usage in its respective unit. Therefore, the submeters measure each unit’s electricity consumption differently, and the main meter keeps track of the entire property’s consumption. Therefore, it is possible to charge each tenant separately and fairly since it is only their consumption.

Why is Submetering Important?

Although submetering may sound like a complicated system, a skilled electrical installation technician will install the system efficiently and effectively. Some of the reasons why submetering your property’s electrical system circuit include;

Easy and Accurate Billing

The first notable reason a property owner should submeter their electrical system is for easy and accurate billing. When billing each unit in your property directly without a sub-metered system, you, as a property owner, are bound to make a mistake and bill one unit more or less than their actual electrical consumption.

In addition, if your utility company does not bill each unit on your property, it falls under your jurisdiction to ensure that the tenants get fair and accurate billing from the primary meter consumption. However, determining each unit’s electricity consumption can take time and effort, especially if there are many units. Therefore, you will usually estimate, which does not give actual usage. Consequently, some clients will be charged more or less than their actual consumption since different tenants have different energy usage.

Therefore, to make the billing process more accessible and more accurate, it is best to use submeters for each unit. Apart from each tenant paying for their electricity usage, submetering will eliminate the need to identify each unit’s bill, thus easing your work and saving you time.

Notably, you can also incorporate an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), which makes submetering more convenient. An AMI does not need an electrician to take the reading each month; the reading is done remotely and sent to an app-based interference where you can read the data.

Reduce Energy and Cut Costs

The other reason submetering makes a difference is its ability to reduce energy consumption and save costs. In industrial settings, submetering helps to cluster departments into sections and allocate the necessary energy costs to each department. Therefore, this helps every department monitor its energy consumption and make the necessary changes to be more energy efficient.

Similarly, submetering helps each tenant in property management to identify their electricity usage, which makes them more energy conscious. Consequently, the tenants will make the necessary changes to cut their energy usage if they overuse electricity. Most property owners notice up to a 30% drop in energy consumption after introducing submetering.

Notably, lowering energy usage in homes can result in a positive feedback loop in saving since most of the money is not being used for energy bills or electrical repairs due to unnecessary breakdown of appliances.

Increases Your Property Value

Whether you are building a new or remodeling an existing property, adding submetering to your property helps increase the value of your assets. For starters, it will help tenants manage and minimize their energy usage and eliminates the need for an electrician to fix breakdowns. This will give it an advantage over the other properties, making it a choice for most tenants. On the other hand, submetering will help you realize where energy is lost in your property and how to save it. Therefore, it sets a foundation for energy efficiency.

High energy efficiency is an outstanding quality in a property, especially when aiming to sell it. Therefore, your property will easily attract potential buyers, tenants, and investors who want to save their money.

Like any other electrical appliance or object, all electrical wiring and installation deteriorate with use and age. However, some homeowners overlook the wiring condition, possibly because they are out of sight. Most will have electrical safety inspections once they notice that the fuse is already blown or the breaker is frequently. Others will go ahead and set the breaker again, all by themselves. Unfortunately, this risky undertaking could result in electrical shocks and electrocution. Failure to conduct electrical safety inspections will most certainly result in you calling an emergency electrician. Did you know electrical faults are the most common cause of house fires? Regular inspection of your wiring and electrical installations could catch issues that might cause this, such as arcing.

Electrical Safety Inspection Checklist

As explained above, electrical safety should be included in your list of priorities. While electrical inspection might seem like any other routine chore, it is more than that. There are some electrical hazards that, at first, aren’t that obvious. However, they can potentially grow into a worse problem down the line if left unchecked. That is when you might regret wishing you had called an electrician to service your electrical installations and/or wiring. A routine electrical safety inspection includes:

  • Identification of potential electrical hazards
  • Ensuring all your installations and wiring are up to code
  • Testing the carbon monoxide and fire alarms
  • Making sure GFCI outlets are properly wired
  • Testing the electrical meter and safety switches
  • Inspection of your electrical panel by evaluating the circuit breaker and fuse capacity
  • Checking for any signs or arcing
  • Ensuring no loose wires are present
  • Ensuring that all outlets are properly grounded
  • Evaluating and maintaining the repairs made in the past

This list is in no way exhaustive. Your emergency electrician will inspect many other parts and connections to ensure that your electrical wiring and installations are in good shape. It ensures your home and family are safe from the numerous electrical hazards.

How Often Should You Have Electrical Safety Inspections?

Some homeowners wait too long before calling electricians for electrical safety inspections. You want to ensure that all your appliances are running, and the best way of achieving that is by having the electrical installations and wiring inspected. But how often should your electrical system be inspected? Most professionals recommend that you have an electrical system inspection after every 3-5 years at the minimum. However, having an annual inspection will ensure that your electrical system is pulling its weight. However, you might have to call an emergency electrician for inspection if:

  • Your breaker is tripping frequently
  • You have bought a previously owned home recently
  • Major appliances are experiencing electrical issues at your home
  • Your home is over 40 years old
  • You’ve had a major renovation or remodeling that could have affected your electrical system
  • There has been flooding after water leaks or storms
  • You have experienced a power outage caused by lightning

However, preventative care is the best care you can give your electrical system. Hence, if you cannot recall when you last had the system inspected, you should enlist a reliable electrician to check your installations, wiring, and outlets. These professionals will test all the main and most vulnerable parts, such as outlets, to ensure they are safe. Besides protecting your home and family from electrical hazards, an inspection from a licensed electrician means you’ll have a better idea of the workings of your system.

Are there Benefits to Electrical Safety Inspections?

Upkeeping and maintenance tasks are endless for a homeowner. There is a lot to consider for your family and yourself. However, this doesn’t mean you should forget about your electrical system. You must keep electrical safety in mind, and that is where electrical safety inspections are crucial. Below are the main benefits;

Saves You Money

While they might appear to be using your hard-earned cash, electrical safety inspections will save you money in the long run. Inspections help homeowners identify the developing issues before they become expensive major problems. For instance, damaged wires might spark through arcing and result in electrical fires. Electronics also can fail when your electrical system doesn’t work properly. In the end, all the things above will cost you more.

Helps Avert Issues With Electronics

The last thing you want is a malfunctioning system. However, electrical safety inspections will help you avert any issues with your electronics that could arise from a lack of maintenance. Electronic gadgets such as appliances and computers could be damaged if faulty wiring. You can avoid this by scheduling an electrical inspection.

Catching Problems Early

Regular inspections will catch developing problems before they worsen into expensive repair issues that require the attention of an emergency electrician. The professional might find frayed wires during the inspection and immediately fix them. Unfortunately, if you didn’t have an electrical inspection to catch the damage, it could cause a house fire. Between 2015 and 2019, malfunctions and electrical failures were the second leading cause of electrical home fires. They accounted for 13% of the total number of home fires.

Ensures Your Electrical System Is Efficient

Regular electrical inspections will ensure your electrical system runs at optimal performance. Since the inspections will help uncover any failures or problems early, they will keep the electricity costs manageable and increase the overall service life of your electronics.

Follows Electrical Standards

All electricians must follow the National Electric Code when conducting electrical safety inspections. NEC is a benchmark for electrical safety for protecting property and people from different electrical hazards. There are local and national standards that homeowners must follow. When you hire a licensed electrician, you can rest assured that they will follow the local and national codes when conducting electrical inspections, ensuring your safety and that of your property.

Safety Measures to Take Before an Emergency Electrician Arrives

Of all the emergencies in your home, an electrical emergency is among the most dangerous. Electrical emergencies can cause fires, shocks, and even fatalities if not handled properly. Therefore, it is crucial to know how to stay safe and minimize the risks before the emergency electrician arrives. This blog post will discuss the safety measures to take when facing an electrical emergency. These measures will ensure your safety and help the electrician do their job more efficiently. But first, let’s take a look at the situations that are considered electrical emergencies.

What Situations Are Considered Electrical Emergencies

Many electrical emergencies cannot be objectively defined. For instance, a young couple who loses electricity at home will want the issue fixed as soon as possible, but they can likely make do until normal business hours. However, a person who uses a stairlift to get up and down the stairs would need the power loss addressed as soon as possible, as they would be virtually stuck on either level until the problem was resolved.

However, below are some situations that warrant a call to an emergency electrician.

Buzzing Noise From The Breaker Box

When an issue, such as a short circuit, arises with your electrical system, your breaker box will turn off the power to the affected components. By cutting off the flow of electricity before it can cause harm, circuit breakers save people from getting shocked.

A humming or buzzing noise could indicate that a breaker is trying to trip but is being prevented by a malfunction. This, in turn, raises the possibility that live electricity is present someplace in the house.

Power Outage

A power outage is one of the most common electrical emergencies. As we’ve already established, not everyone considers a power outage an emergency. However, if the blackout is localized to your home, there may be more serious issues, such as with the breaker box, that require immediate attention.

If the outage affects the entire neighborhood, however, there is certainly a problem with the power lines, and you should contact your electricity provider immediately.

Electrical Fire

Any fire caused by an electrical problem should, of course, be dealt with immediately. However, this situation is different because you shouldn’t call your electrician first but rather the emergency services. You’ll have to use your best judgment, but remember that electrical fires spread rapidly, so getting your loved ones to safety is the top priority before calling the fire department. Then, turn off the power if you can.

After the fire has been dealt with, you can call an emergency electrician to inspect your electrical system and determine the fire’s origin.

Burnt Outlets

Burnt outlets are a major safety concern that most people are unaware of. A lot of individuals get shocked when they mistakenly touch burnt outlets. If you notice smoke coming from your outlet or burn marks in the area, you should always avoid touching it. If you must unplug something from it, do so only while wearing nonconductive gear, and don’t plug anything until the electrician gives the all-clear.

Likely, too many devices are plugged into the outlets simultaneously, so the outlet is burning. You should familiarize yourself with the wattage of your outlets in advance and avoid using an adapter with a higher rating. Professionals should be called in to address the root cause of the problem and repair any burned-out outlets.

Electrical Shock

If exposed wires or broken plugs are present, you or someone you know could be seriously injured by coming into contact with electricity. This is extremely risky and could even be fatal. In an electrical shock, the power source should be disconnected and emergency services contacted immediately.

If someone is experiencing an electric shock, STAY AWAY FROM THEM. If they are stuck, you can pry them loose with a plastic or wooden stick, none of which conduct electricity. You can perform CPR, if you know how to, once they are no longer touching the conductive object.

Things To Do Before The Electrician Arrives

Stay Calm

In most cases, panic is counterproductive. Even worse, when stressed out, you’re more prone to forget vital details. Keep your cool and listen for any buzzing sounds, smells of burning, or other warning indicators.

Disconnect Power and Unplug Appliances to Ensure Safety

In an electrical emergency, you first should turn off the electricity at your home’s main breaker, presuming that doing so is not only possible but also safe. This should keep the situation under control while you wait for the emergency electrician to arrive (unless there is an electrical fire). Once that’s done, you can unplug everything that uses electricity. This is crucial if you are experiencing an emergency involving a scent or noise but are unsure of its source.

Clear Out the Area That the Electrician Will Use

Even if you don’t mind paying a higher fee per hour, it’s in your best interest to make your electrician’s job as simple as possible. If you have located the trouble spot, make room for your electrician to work by removing any obstructions.

Put the Kids and the Pets Somewhere Out of Harm’s Way

Again, this is based on the assumption that there is no immediate threat to anyone on your property, as there would be if an electrical fire were present. In that event, your priority should be to get your loved ones to safety. Even if it’s not life-threatening, keep your loved ones and pets away from the problem location, especially while the electrician works on the issue.

Avoid Touching Electrical Objects

It goes without saying, but even if you turn off the electricity, don’t touch any appliances or electrical fixtures. This is particularly true if the issue is a noise emanating from your breaker box, as that would suggest something has shorted someplace.

Keep Emergency Tools Handy

While waiting for the electrician to arrive, you should have a fire extinguisher designed to put out electrical fires, especially if smoke or a burning odor was the original purpose for calling the electrician. A flashlight is also necessary, as you should have turned off the electricity by now.

It’s likely that your electrician already has everything they’ll need to get the job done, but it’s always preferable to err on the side of caution.

Stay Safe, and Act Swiftly

Although it’s natural to panic in the face of an electrical fire or other emergency, staying calm and protecting your loved ones is the priority. While waiting for the electrician, avoid touching anything and have a fire extinguisher handy. And, of course, if there is a fire or an electrical shock, dial 911 immediately!

Why Should You Have A 24/7 Electrician on Dial?

Whenever things go wrong, they don’t choose the time or place. Unfortunately, this means they will catch you unawares at an inconvenient time or place. Planning ahead could be the key to getting out of the tight spot they push you to. Just as you have a doctor you can contact in emergencies, and you should also have the contact of a reliable 24/7 electrician or even plumber that you can call when your electrical systems and wiring experience issues. Buzzing noises, burning smells, constantly tripping breakers, and electric shocks threaten your family’s well-being. While these are just signs, ignoring or postponing their repairs could worsen the underlying problems. Never attempt DIY repairs on electrical works. Imagine waking up to find your air conditioner isn’t working in the summer or the lights aren’t turning on. While this can be inconvenient and unsettling, you shouldn’t try to repair the underlying problem alone. Instead, you should enlist a professional, and here’s where having the contacts of one that is available 24/7 is critical. Below are the benefits of having a 24/7 electrical technician on the dial.

Peace Of Mind

When you can access electrical services 24/7, you can rest assured that whenever an issue arises, a professional will promptly arrive at your home to attend to it. This peace of mind means that you can carry out tasks without worry. Where you need help installing some electrical appliances, repairs on the existing wiring, or even advice on saving energy, it is comforting to know you do not have to wait till regular office hours to get help. With just one call, the electrical technicians will swing into action.

Overnight Issues

If something goes wrong overnight, waiting till the electrical technicians open in the morning can be stressful and uncomfortable. This could make your kids miss the bus or make you late for work. Because you use a coffee maker or toaster to make breakfast, the regular breakfast routine will be disturbed. Additionally, a lack of power to your air conditioning system could see the temperatures spike, making your sleep uncomfortable. With a 24/7 electrician, you don’t have to suffer all this. If an issue creates a burning smell or smoke, you do not have to wait until regular working hours. 24/7 electrical technicians will be at your home within no time, inspect the electrical system, craft a solution for your issues, and remain with a few hours of slumber before the morning.

Safety

When it comes to electrical work, never try addressing a problem by yourself, no matter how simple it might appear. This is because you could expose yourself to the risk of injuring yourself, shocks, or even electrocution. Instead, always enlist a licensed technician to complete the job. Although this might appear like an additional expense for minor fixes, it can save you money.

Imagine the power goes off in the middle of the night. You diagnose the problem and conclude that the job is simple enough and you can complete it yourself. Remember that you are half awake, only armed with a flashlight so that you can see in darkness. You might touch naked wires unconsciously and electrocute yourself, as you probably cannot see what you are doing. Even if you complete the repair without injuring yourself, an improper repair could still be dangerous. And when you go back to bed, you are suddenly woken up by the smoke alarm as your “repair” has resulted in an even larger problem.

Holidays

Holidays are hectic, with food, gatherings, stress, lights, and celebrations. Holidays are when households typically use more electricity for heating, cooking, and decorative lighting, so having an electrical problem is not unusual. However, finding an electrician to handle your electrical problems can be difficult and expensive because many professionals leave for holidays. Your entire schedule can become messed up if you lose electricity for longer than a few minutes at home. No matter what day of the week or hour it is, having a trusted and qualified electrical technician on call ensures that the problem may be fixed fast.

Response Time

You can wait for a few days to have minor electrical problems addressed. However, more significant issues can also arise and require immediate attention. If you call a regular electrical technician, they could try to cram you in since they are overbooked. You waste the day waiting for the professional to learn they cannot resolve the problem that day. If you have a dependable 24/7 electrical repair technician, they are prepared, equipped, and trained to get to you quickly and discover a quick fix. Call a technician you know will arrive quickly rather than waiting to be “squeezed in”!

Sense of Urgency

24/7 emergency electrical services providers understand the importance of fixing electrical problems quickly. They understand that time is paramount and there is no room for assuming things. They are equipped with tools to make opening, testing, and diagnosing problems easier and faster. Upon diagnosis of the underlying issue, they will professionally, albeit swiftly, fix it to ensure you are up and running within no time. Dedication is a 24/7 electrician’s second nature, and working under the pressure of limited time is what they excel in.

You Do Not Have To Close For Maintenance Work

Molded Case Circuit Breaker Vs. Conventional Circuit Breaker; Understanding Their Differences As Explained by Your Experienced Electrician

Electricity is a vital factor in the operation and comfort of your home. Not only does it help with lighting, but it also facilitates essential aspects such as your health by warming your home in the rapidly changing weather seasons. Electricity also helps make life easier through washing machines and fridges. Have you ever considered what life would be like without electricity? Unfortunately, this world is complex and very dangerous for your household. Therefore, you need the help of an electrician to fortify your home from all these dangers. A professional in the field will also help you decide on the best protective measures for your home. This article will highlight the differences between conventional and Molded Case Circuit Breakers to help you better understand these electrical devices.

Circuit Breaker

A circuit breaker is a protective safety device that guards your home’s electrical system against short circuits and overloads. Conventional and Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB) are the primary circuit breakers. Conventional circuit breakers are ideal for homes. They protect residential structures from shock hazards, overloads, and fire. Conversely, molded case circuit breakers are best for commercial and industrial settings. This is because they have a robust design and an increased carrying capacity.

Molded Case Circuit Breaker

A Molded Case Circuit Breaker is a specialized circuit breaker that provides enhanced reliability and protection for electrical systems. This circuit breaker type features a molded case that helps dispose of heat, keeping the breaker cool. It also houses its internal components, which protects them from damage. Conversely, conventional circuit breakers have a lower level of protection since they lack the molded casing. In addition, the traditional circuit breaker does not have safety features such as current limiting capabilities or trip indicators.

What is a Molded Case Circuit Breaker?

An MCCB is an electrical device that safeguards and protects an electrical circuit from faults and overloads. When searching for an overcurrent protection device for your electrical system, an electrician can use the MCCB as the main switch in your home’s circuit breaker panel. This circuit breaker protects your home by detecting an overcurrent or fault in your system and interrupting its flow. Since these devices come in ratings ranging from 30A to over 6000A, it is best to consult a professional on the best type for your home before purchase. In addition, MCCBs come in different trip characteristics such as long-time delay, short-time delay, instantaneous trip, and adjustable trip settings. Notably, when buying an MCCB, ensure that it is certified.

Uses Of Molded Case Circuit Breakers

The primary use of an MCCB is to protect electrical circuits from short circuits and overcurrent. Therefore, this makes it ideal for residential, industrial, and commercial settings. However, due to their increased current carrying capacities and robust designs, this circuit breaker is primarily used in commercial and industrial electrical circuits.

In addition to the protection of electrical circuits, molded case circuit breakers can be used for ground fault protection and motor overload protection in single-phase and three-phase systems. Since the MCCB can carry current even after an interruption, this makes them very reliable. Therefore, they are also suitable for electrical circuits where power interruptions are undesired, such as elevators, medical equipment, and HVAC systems.

What is A Conventional Circuit Breaker?

A conventional circuit breaker is an electrical protection device that shields electrical circuits from short circuits and overload damage. In the event of a short circuit or an overload, this device detects it and interrupts the power flow to the system. Therefore, a traditional circuit breaker is an ideal choice if you are looking for an electrical overload protection device for your home. It will protect your home from electrical fires keeping those in your home safe. Conventional circuit breakers are also helpful in industries to protect machines from overloading. These circuit breakers come in different configurations and settings, making them applicable to other power sources and applications. Therefore, consult an electrician when searching for a traditional circuit breaker for the best configuration circuit breaker.

Uses of Conventional Circuit Breakers

A conventional circuit breaker disconnects the power supply to the electric circuit when it detects a short circuit or an overload. Therefore, they are ideal for residential, industrial, and commercial settings to prevent damage caused by power surges, protect people from electric shock, and prevent fires. When used at home, an electrician will install conventional circuit breakers in the main circuit breaker box. The central panel comprises small boxes, each containing different circuit breakers for other parts of the house.

Therefore, they have clear labels for easy identification. Consequently, during a short circuit or an overload in a specific area, the circuit breaker to that area will trip without interfering with the rest of the system. Therefore, the breaker prevents further damage from happening in that area by tripping and cutting its power supply. Conventional breakers are also used in industrial and commercial electrical circuits to protect primary systems from short-circuit and overload damages. However, these breakers have higher voltages due to the power rating in these systems. These large-scale breakers are located in the Main Distribution Board (MBD) for efficient operation.

Which is An Ideal choice Between MCCB and Conventional Circuit Breakers?

When looking for a protection device for sensitive appliances, the MCCB is an ideal choice. MCCB will safeguard your electrical equipment from current or voltage spikes. It is also a good choice for short circuit and overload protection in large electrical systems such as commercial buildings and warehouses. Conversely, a conventional circuit breaker is ideal for light electrical circuits like those found in residential buildings.

The primary purpose of any circuit breaker is to protect the electrical circuit and components against overload and short circuits. Are you looking to buy a circuit breaker and are undecided on which to purchase? Contact us at Buffalo Electric for advice on the best breakers.

According to the US Fire Administration, 353,500 residential fires occurred within the United States, causing 2,840 deaths and 11 400 injuries. In all these, 24,200 residential fires resulted from electrical malfunctions and resulted in 295 deaths and 900 injuries. The main reasons for such fires are old wiring, outdated circuits, and overloading of the circuit panels. If you have no plans to have an electrician inspect your home’s electrical system, the statistics above should compel you. The licensed technician will confirm whether you need electrical panel upgrades. But why should you upgrade the electrical panel?

You Get Intermittent or “Mini” Blackouts at Your Home

Have you realized your home is experiencing mini blackouts regularly? If the “outages” only happen in your home and don’t seem to happen at your neighbors, there’s a likelihood your circuit breaker is faulty. Never ignore a faulty circuit breaker, which could result in residential fires. The circuit breaker is a protective electrical component, and if it cannot do its job properly, such problems arise.

It protects your home and appliances by cutting off electrical power whenever electrical overloads arise. The overloads happen when the main panel continuously draws more electricity than the circuit is designed to handle. This normally occurs when you plug in or simultaneously run many high-voltage appliances into a circuit. Whenever this happens, the circuit breaker trips, opening the circuit to prevent any further flow of electric current.

Your circuit breaker must trip to prevent the panel from overloading and damaging your appliances and electrical system. However, if the breaker keeps tripping, it can no longer keep up with the energy demands of your home’s appliances. In other words, it is outdated, too old, or has a lower rating than your appliances and should be upgraded. Hence, you should enlist an electrical technician to replace it with a more modern breaker that can keep up.

You Have Heard Crackling or Buzzing Sounds From Your Electrical Panel

Do you hear cracking or buzzing sounds whenever you pass near the panel? That indicates there is short-circuiting in your electrical system. Those sounds you are hearing are live electricity. However, short-circuiting also can result in breaker trips. Short-circuiting arises whenever the “hot” or active wire comes into contact with another hot wire. A short circuit can also arise when the active wire touches the neutral wire. Regardless, the contact between the two wires results in a massive flow of current which causes those buzzing or crackling sounds. Eventually, this makes the breakers trip. However, you also might notice burn marks on surfaces such as breaker switches or wall outlets. Another common side-effect of a shorted circuit is blown fuses. If you notice this, enlist an electrician to inspect your electrical panel. However, they will most likely recommend that you replace it to avert risks caused by short-circuiting.

Presence of a Smoky Smell From the Panel

When the circuit breakers in your panel trip, check for a smoky smell before resetting it. Are there actual or visible burn spots or marks on the switches? If there are, that is a surefire sign of a current overflow, a hazardous phenomenon. The burnt smell is normally a sign of overheated insulation or wires. Regardless, either scenario is dangerous; it’s best to contact an electrical services provider for a further inspection. Although the power box could still work, it won’t be long if it keeps shutting down. Besides, if it fails, the circuit breakers might not shut down. Since the circuit breaker is a protective fixture, this is the last thing you want. Hence, it might be about time you replace it.

If the Label on Your Electrical Panel Indicates FPE

Between the 50s and 80s, FPE panels were common in many US homes. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission began investigating FPW in 1980. Unfortunately, the Commission found that the FPE breakers failed the calibration test requirements. Additionally, the Commission found that one-third of the panels had defective circuit breakers.

Due to these problems, the Old FPE electrical panels pose a serious fire hazard and safety threat. It is estimated that defective products could be behind over 2,800 electrical fires in the US annually. Unfortunately, many defective FPE panels remain in some old US homes. Those are many homes considering that about 50% of the owner-occupied homes in the US were built before the 80s.

Do you live in one of the old houses? It could still have an FPE unit installed. It is best to enlist an electrician for an inspection to see the manufacturer of your electrical panel. If FPE manufactures it, the professional will recommend an immediate replacement to ensure you remain safer. This is an instance of not all gold.

You Have a ZINSCO Electrical Panel

Does your electrical panel indicate “ZINSCO-Sylvania” or simply “ZINSCO?” Then you should also get it checked by an electrical technician. Studies have shown that over one-quarter of these electrical panels are defective. Most of the “ZINSCO-Sylvania” or “ZINSCO” panels’ problems are because of delayed electrical overload response. This means they do not “trip” immediately. They sense a current overload. Rather, they carry the excessive load for a longer period. Unfortunately, the overload may overheat the electrical network at your home, given enough time.

Overheating can cause electrical arcing, besides overheating your electrical wires. When an electrical current deviates from its intended direction or course, it results in an arc. An arc flash that resembles a huge ball of light and heat energy can then be produced due to this transition. That alone should prompt you to think about getting your panel safety inspected. This way, an electrician can verify whether your ZINSCO electrical panel is defective or working as intended. If defective, the professional will recommend a replacement.

Reasons Electricians May Recommend Using Underground Electrical Cables On Your Property

Electricity is an essential resource in our daily lives. We rely on electrical systems for lighting, heating, cooking, or running devices to keep our homes and businesses functioning. And when installing electrical cables, there are two primary options – overhead lines and underground lines. While overhead lines have been popular, many electricians recommend underground cables for various reasons. In this blog post, we’ll examine why electrical contractors may recommend using underground electrical cables for your property.

Safer

Electricians may recommend using underground electrical cables on your property for various reasons. However, one of the most compelling is safety. By burying electrical cables, the risk of accidental contact with the live wires is greatly reduced, potentially preventing serious injury or even death. Additionally, underground lines are less susceptible to damage from harsh weather conditions, such as high winds or ice storms. Finally, underground electrical cables are less likely to be interfered with by animals and pests, which can cause power outages and potential damage. So, if you have safety concerns, it’s probably a good idea to speak with your electrical contractor about using underground cables.

More Reliable

When it comes to electrical wiring for your property, the system’s reliability is crucial. That’s why many electricians recommend using underground electrical cables. This type of wiring has lower chances of being damaged by weather, animals, or accidental damage caused by people. Additionally, underground lines are more reliable because they are not subject to shorts caused by outside elements, such as moisture and dust. The result is a more reliable electrical system that can provide uninterrupted power for years. However, proper installation ensures that your underground electrical cables are reliable and safe. You don’t want to skimp on the installation, so hiring an experienced electrical contractor is important.

Less Visually Intrusive

Electricians may often recommend using underground electrical cables on your property due to their visual benefits. By opting for underground electrical cables, you can eliminate the unsightly appearance of overhead power lines while retaining the power supply to your home or business. This is especially useful if you live in a scenic area where unsightly power lines can detract from the natural beauty of your surroundings. With underground electrical cables, you can enjoy clear views, a more unobstructed skyline, and minimal visible impact, making it a popular option for homeowners and commercial property owners.

Long-term Cost Savings

While underground electrical cables come with higher installation costs than overhead lines, they are cost-effective in the long run. Underground lines require less maintenance and a longer lifespan, which means you’ll save money on repairs and replacements. Also, underground cables are less susceptible to damage caused by weather elements or human activities, reducing the risk of repair costs and downtime. This ensures you have a more reliable power supply, which means more value for your money in the long run. With proper installation and maintenance, underground electrical cables can provide reliable power for decades, offering significant cost savings.

Environmental Friendly

Moving your underground electrical cables can help reduce the environmental impact by eliminating the need to cut down trees or clear land to make way for overhead power lines. Overhead electrical cables also require frequent maintenance, like trimming trees and vegetation along the lines, which can disrupt the environment. Underground electrical cables, however, are less intrusive on the environment and require fewer maintenance activities. Additionally, underground lines reduce the risk of wildlife getting entangled in the wires, helping preserve the area’s natural balance. When it comes to the environment, underground lines are much more environmentally friendly than overhead ones.

Protection From Vandalism

Vandalism is a growing problem in many areas. While most vandals target public property, they sometimes focus on private homes. Power lines, particularly overhead lines, are a common target of vandalism. Vandals often cut or break these lines causing power outages, damage to the lines themselves, and a potential safety hazard. This makes overhead lines a much easier target as they are easily accessible.

Underground electrical cables, on the other hand, are much less vulnerable to vandalism. Underground lines are buried safely beneath the ground, making them much harder to access and less tempting to vandals. Vandals would require heavy-duty equipment to dig up the lines, making it much less likely for them to succeed. Therefore, while they may not eliminate vandalism, underground electrical cables offer greater protection than their overhead counterparts. Accessing them requires too much effort and resources, making them a less attractive option.

FAQs About Underground Electrical Cables

Do Underground Electrical Cables Require Special Installation?

Yes, underground electrical cables require specialized installation. They require more attention during installation to decrease the likelihood of corrosion, physical damage, and moisture ingress. These protective measures include proper coating and insulation, the right choice of grounding options, and careful placement of cables in the trench. Hiring qualified and experienced professionals to install and maintain underground electrical cables properly is important.

Are There Any Disadvantages To Using Underground Electrical Cables?

One potential disadvantage of underground electrical cables is that they can be more expensive to install than overhead lines. It can also be more difficult to access and repair them if they become damaged. However, the long-term benefits of safety and aesthetics often make underground lines a worthwhile investment.

Can Underground Electrical Cables Be Repaired Or Replaced?

Yes, repairing or replacing underground electrical cables is possible if they become damaged or outdated. This typically involves digging up the old cables and conduit, installing new ones, and restoring the ground surface. However, this can be a complex and costly process, depending on the damage’s extent and the lines’ location.

An Electrician Explains Common Light Fixtures Issues That Homeowners Should Know About

Are you tired of coping with flickering lights or burnt-out bulbs at home? Light fixtures are an essential part of residential premises. They provide both functionality and style. Some of the common light fixtures found in most homes include chandeliers, pendant lights, and recessed lighting.

However, after some time, they can develop problems affecting their functionality. Keep reading to understand common light fixture issues and when to call in an electrician to ensure the safety of your property and loved ones.

Flickering Bulbs

Flickering or dimming bulbs is a frequent problem in most households. Although it might appear like a minor inconvenience, it could signify a more significant electrical problem. If your light bulbs are flickering or seem dim, the fixture’s wiring could be a problem, or the switch may be faulty.

Regarding wiring, there could be several issues at play. For instance, the wiring could be damaged or worn out, or there could be a loose connection between the wires. Sometimes, the wiring may not be well-suited to the bulb you’re using, resulting in a mismatch that causes the flickering or dimming.

Flickering or dimming bulbs can also be due to an overloaded circuit or an electrical surge. If you detect signs such as a burning smell or sparks, it’s essential to turn off the power immediately. Then you can call an electrical expert right away to diagnose and fix the problem to ensure the safety of your home and family.

Outdated Fixtures

Outdated light fixtures can be ineffective and cause various issues in your home. Older fixtures may consume more electricity than newer models and yield less light, causing higher energy bills and poorer lighting quality. In addition, outdated fixtures may not be as safe as modern fixtures, especially if they have worn or faulty wiring.

Upgrading to newer, more energy-efficient light fixtures can provide various benefits. To begin with, they use less electricity and can significantly reduce your energy bills over time.

Secondly, newer models often have a longer lifespan, meaning you’ll save money on replacement costs in the long run. According to Energy Star, unlike traditional models, newer fixture models use 90 percent less energy.

Besides, newer models come in various styles and designs, so you can choose a light fixture that complements your home’s aesthetic while providing optimal lighting.

In addition, you can choose state-of-the-art fixtures with dimmer switches, motion sensors, or smart home integration, providing added convenience and control over your home’s lighting.

When upgrading your light fixtures, it’s fundamental to consider factors such as the size of the room, the desired level of lighting, and your budget. So it is crucial to consult an electrician to assess your home’s electrical system and recommend the best fixtures to meet your needs.

Overloaded Circuit

An overloaded circuit occurs when too many electrical devices or fixtures are connected to a single circuit causing it to draw more current than it can safely handle. Sometimes, it can result in frequent circuit breaker tripping, flickering lights, and even electrical fires.

If you have multiple light fixtures on the same circuit, you should examine the circuit capacity to ensure you are overloading. You can do this by checking the circuit breaker’s rating and comparing it to the combined wattage of all the light fixtures on the circuit.

If the circuit is overloaded, you can have a technician install an additional wiring circuit for your lighting needs. This will allow you to distribute the load across multiple electrical circuits. It will also reduce the risk of overloading and improve your electrical system’s overall safety and efficiency.

Humming

Another common issue that homeowners may encounter with their light fixtures is humming. A humming sound can occur when the light fixture is turned on, and several factors, including bulbs or wiring, can cause it.

If the humming sound is from the light fixture, it may be due to its design or construction. Some vibrate and produce a humming sound when the current passes through them.

In this case, there may not be much that can be done to eliminate the humming sound, and you may need to consider getting a professional to replace the fixture.

Bulbs Burning Out Early

Bulbs burning out early is another common problem occurring due to light fixtures. Using bulbs with a wattage higher than the fixture rating can cause the bulbs to burn out quickly.

On the other hand, bulbs with a wattage lower than the fixture rating can also cause problems, such as dimming or flickering. It’s essential to use light bulbs with wattage ratings that match the fixture to avoid premature burnouts.

If you’re using bulbs at the correct wattage and they’re still burning out quickly, there may be a problem with the fixture itself. Faulty wiring, loose connections, or other issues can cause bulbs to burn out prematurely. In this case, it’s best to have a qualified electrical technician test the fixture for problems, repair it, or replace it if necessary.

Understanding Types of Arc Faults and How Your Electrician Can Help Prevent Them

If you’ve been exposed to various electrical circuits, you probably have seen visible discharges emerge from the circuitry. In many instances, discharges arise in circuits with loose connections or when wiring connections are loose. These discharges also occur if some electrical components or equipment are faulty or worn out. The discharges are called arcs and arise when the electrical current flowing via a conductor starts to ionize air when it jumps to another conductor through the gap. Unfortunately, the arcs increase the circuit temperatures, which might prove fatal as it could trigger a fire, damaging the circuit. Many of the electrical fires are caused by electrical faults. Fortunately, there is a way that electricians can help you control these arcs. By Installing Arc Fault Detection Devices or AFDDs, you can effectively deal with these electrical arcs.

What Is AFDD?

These are devices that are, in most instances, installed in consumer electrical units. Installing AFDDs in consumer units helps in protecting the circuitry from the damaging impacts of arc faults. This ensures a safer electrical current distribution or flow in the appliance’s circuit. AFDDs rely on microprocessor technologies for detecting any anomalies in electrical flow. If the electrical signals show signs of a possible occurrence of arcing in the circuit, the AFDD cuts off the current flow. This helps prevent the arcs from starting a fire that could spread into other parts of your home. Arc fault detection devices are highly sensitive when detecting the presence of arcs compared to other devices.

Types of Arc Faults?

As mentioned above, arc faults are electrical discharges caused when electrical power ionizes the air when it jumps between two or more electrical conductors. The electrical discharge overheats the circuit and could cause a fire that may completely damage the circuitry. They often arise whenever an electrical jump happens between two conductors. The arc faults have different electrical currents, which determines how strong they are and the length of time they’ll take. For example, arc faults with lower amps are weak and cannot cause more harm than those with higher amps. There are three distinct types of arc faults including;

Parallel Arc Fault

These arc faults always arise when two power phases are close. They also can arise between a phase and the ground. In many instances, Arc faults always arise whenever the insulation material peels off or is degraded or when the materials in the circuit are contaminated by dirt. The other cause of parallel arc faults is when there are loose connections in the circuitry or loose screw rivets in the busbar.

Earth Arc Fault

Also called ground faults, earth arc faults always arise whenever 2 or more conductors carrying current come to contact with the ground. This makes the flow path for the fault power to flow via the ground. Are the wires carrying power uninsulated? Then you should have an electrician replace them as they will undoubtedly cause ground arc faults.

Series Arc Fault

Series arc faults always arise in series with the current load in a circuit and are caused by loose connections between the cord and terminals. The Arc faults can also arise when the circuit has incomplete cord connections. This causes an increase in the contact resistance, leading to arc generation in the circuit. The arcs might have high temperatures if there is a high potential difference across the electrical circuit.

Comparing Different Device’s Arc Protection

Today, there’re many arc protection devices. However, the most common ones include Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs), Residual Current Circuit Beakers with integral Overcurrent protection (RCBOs), and Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs). All these circuit breakers have distinct features which make them highly efficient at protecting against faults. However, their use might vary during installation. For instance, RCCBs are used in series with MCBs in circuits. This protects the appliance or device from short-circuit power whenever there’s an overcurrent.

The other similarity between all these devices is that they’re always installed in a consumer unit box, particularly the fuse box. Hence, neither may be installed elsewhere other than within the fuse box. The difference between these arc fault detection devices is that Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) don’t protect the circuitry against ground faults, while RCBs and RCCBs do.

Another critical difference between them is that MCBs don’t protect human beings against the risk of electrical shocks. This is among the most important factors to consider when choosing either and analyzing their safety. However, RCBs protect human beings, meaning they are safer circuit breakers. Further, MCBs always feature 4 pole options ranging from 1-4 poles. In contrast, RCBs don’t feature the single-pole option. Thus, they heavily rely on the remaining three-pole options. This is the reason you’ll find them used in series with MCBs in circuits.

How these devices are used also varies. For example, MCBs are used at home and in industries. On the other hand, RCBs are generally used in residential circuits. This means these circuit breakers may always have differences unknown to you, although they have similar functionalities. Thus, when purchasing a breaker, consult your reliable, experienced electrician to ensure your chosen one meets your needs.

Why Arc Fault Detection Devices?

Arc fault detection devices are always vital in places with a huge electrical fire risk. Hence, they usually are installed in electrical circuits which supply electrical power to high-risk premises, particularly those meant for accommodation and sleeping. Such premises, including apartments, hostels, homes, hospitals, and hotels, are high-risk because they contain people’s personal belongings and are usually used for accommodation. Most of these belongings are combustible, meaning they can be destroyed by a fire easily. Hence, electricians apply these devices widely in the installation systems of these premises.

The electrical code setting standards for electrical appliance manufacturers, electrical services providers, and other related electrical industry suppliers undergo constant changes now and then. The National Electrical Code (NEC) sets and enforces the standards. It is worth noting that any advancements in these codes aim to enhance electrical safety, appliance durability, convenience, and leveraging the ever-changing technology. At times, if the problems that these changes in electrical code address are left unfixed, electrical issues might arise that need the immediate attention of an emergency electrician. Below are some possibilities that not being up to code might result into:

Outdated Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers are essential in protecting your electrical appliances from power surges. This fixture at the heart of your home’s electrical system may sometimes be out-of-date. When the breakers are outdated, they are not breakers anymore. Rather, you’ll have to rely on the old-fashioned glass fuses that feature cartridge fuses for protecting your appliances. This is all hoping that nobody at your home has been using those old tricks for bypassing the fuse for convenience. You might not have to protect your electrical circuit if someone does.

As you can guess, your electrical circuit isn’t protected and poses severe electrical risks. If you realize that you haven’t updated your breakers for several years and there have been changes in the electrical code, you should contact an emergency electrician to see if the changes include circuit breakers. Remember, older breakers are prone to malfunctioning. Electrical overloads should result in a shutdown of your circuits. But What happens if that protection doesn’t work? Well, your home and family might be in for some trouble.

Outdated Wiring

When copper prices soared, electrical component and appliance manufacturers had to look for alternatives. It was generally agreed that aluminum wiring would form a good substitute, thanks to its electrical conductivity. Of course, that was if properly used, installed, maintained, and so forth. Since it isn’t as good a conductor as copper is, the wire had to be pretty different, and connections at every junction, outlet, switch, or light fixture had to be correct.

The aluminum wire would heat up if the conditions above weren’t observed. This warming could result in a raft of issues, such as the expansion and contraction of the connections with time, possibly loosening them. Loose connections are known to cause issues such as arcing and short-circuiting. Hence, installing up-to-code wires is critical to ensuring electrical safety at your home. But how can you know that the wiring at your home is not up-to-code? That’s the easy part. You only have to enlist the help of a reliable electrical technician.

Outdated Electrical Components

Light fixtures, switches, and power outlets are always evolving. Consequently, the standards per NEC also keep changing to accommodate the changes. Additionally, the ones installed at your home are also aging. This combination of factors means that you should always ensure the said components are always to code. Otherwise, the risks you are exposed to will always be growing. You might have a decades-old light switch that sparks and arcs whenever you flip it. While this might only happen occasionally, it sometimes is dangerous.

Light fixtures, especially those with a downward-pointing bulb, handle some heat with expansion, insulating material decay and contraction. If there have been plumbing leaks at your home, you might have some corrosion on the light fixtures. Further, some homes still use two-blade sockets that don’t have a ground connection. Knowing the dangers of such connections, some homeowners try DIY grounding outlets without running a code-worthy ground wire.

And have you seen those electrical outlets installed upside-down? You might have wondered, what’s this? Such practices are common in hospitals. Do you have curious children? Installing code-worthy electrical fittings will ensure their safety. They have coverings that prevent the kids from shoving conducting objects such as spoons and forks inside. If you still use the ungrounded electrical outlets, have an emergency electrician replace them with newer ones that are up-to-code.

Higher Demand for Power

Nowadays, we love our electronic devices. You must only stay briefly before touching your phone or watching a movie on your TV. This means that the electrical outlets will, at most times, be full. Hence, people have turned to using power strips and electrical extension cords. On these, you might have connected several appliances such as your home theaters, amplifiers, and even a huge projection TV. Refrigerators, hair dryers, and dispensers are joined on an extension cord with other handy devices that draw considerable power. You do all this without considering their power ratings.

It is hard to tell, but some appliances are power-hungry and draw nearly all the rated power of the circuit. They could be powerful electronics you cannot suspect or larger appliances such as air conditioners. The common mantra that it is all right, provided it works, is dangerous, especially regarding electrical safety. What if the only protection in the consumer box is old, out-of-date breakers and fuses that cannot match the new appliances? You will end up having to call an electrician.

Surge Protection

Power surges are more likely now than they were previously. If you have an old-style washing machine or air compressor in your garage, you’ve certainly seen the light bulbs flicker as they cycle on and off. That’s not ideal for modern gadgets, and because both computers and TVs are pricey, you probably don’t want to consider what would happen if your gaming system breaks. Emergency electricians may install a whole-house solution that offers surge protection for any delicate equipment you own, regardless of where it is plugged in.

When was the last time you inspected your electrical systems? If you cannot recall, now is the time to have one. Contact us at Buffalo Electric for a professional electrical system inspection and fixes to ensure all components are up-to-code.

What To Consider When Hiring A Commercial Electrician

Electric accidents are common in the modern era, where businesses and homes depend on electricity for smooth operation. Due to the sensitive nature of these installations, there are clear guidelines on who should handle electrical work. Across the United States, property owners and contractors are legally required to contract the services of a certified electrician to handle all matters of electricity.

An electrical technician is trained and experienced in handling a wide range of issues, including installations, repairs, and maintenance. Hiring these professionals has a lot of benefits; however, there are a few things you need to consider when hiring. While this principle is vital for commercial projects, it applies to all areas involving electricity. Here are factors to consider when contracting a commercial electrical company.

Factors to Consider When Contracting a Commercial Electrical Company

Qualifications

Commercial projects are often expensive and extensive. You don’t want an unqualified worker handling your installation, replacement, or repairs since a botched job can lead to huge losses. You need to hire a reliable firm with a pool of experienced technicians with industry knowledge. Keep in mind that a company’s reputation may not be enough since the electrician handling your project may have little to no experience.

Working with seasoned personnel means they can easily diagnose your issues and provide a viable solution, unlike inexperienced colleagues. Depending on the scope of the work, a highly rated company such as Buffalo Electric will send a ‘journeyman electrical technician.’ Unlike regular technicians, these professionals undergo four years of extensive training, gaining experience handling multiple cases, big or small.

Insurance

Electrical works are one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, with a high risk of injury or fatality. Aside from personal injuries, these works can often result in extensive damage to the property. Before hiring a commercial electrical company, ensure the company has a liability and worker’s compensation insurance policy. This cover helps protect you from any financial obligation related to the job. For example, if a worker gets electrocuted during rewiring, the policy can cover their medical bill.

Working with an insured firm leaves you vulnerable to lawsuits, and sometimes, your insurance provider can refuse to honor your claim. A responsible and reputable electrical firm will work towards protecting its workers and clients from the dangers of working with electricity.

Flexibility

Being a commercial property means it’s open for business almost every day. You need to have an electrician who can respond to emergencies or respond to calls at any time of the day or week. Besides timely response, commercial electrical technicians need to be adaptable due to the dynamic nature of commercial projects. These technicians should be able to adjust quickly to challenges to get the project back on track.

Their flexibility should also be seen in their communication. Your electrical technician should be easy to talk to and exchange ideas. Being able to approach your team creates a conducive work environment for a successful project.

Cost

Money is usually the least deciding factor when choosing a contractor for your commercial project. These projects are often complex and require utmost care during installations and repairs to avoid a botched job. Working with a cheap technician means cutting corners to meet demand. While this may seem like a good way to save money, it can prove costly in the future, especially if the technician jumps hoops on some codes or uses substandard goods.

When using costs and fees as a determining factor, you need to find an electrical company that is transparent with its charges. Some firms are known to bill customers with hidden charges driving up the project’s cost, forcing you to go out of budget.

The contractor should provide a quote for the project, a detailed explanation of the procedures involved, and the reason for the charges. Dealing with a transparent contractor means you can create a budget estimate based on available funds. This information also helps you compare their fees with other electrical companies to find one that best fits your needs.

Scan for References and Reviews

Being a first-time client can be challenging, especially if you don’t know what to expect from a commercial electrical company. Some clients have had a bad experience with some firms, making them weary of contractors, hence some hesitation.

Before committing to a specific contractor, it’s advisable to research different firms in the area. You need to find a professional with a customer-first approach with a proven performance record. Online reviews and references are the best way to get unbiased opinions on a contractor’s services. When looking at their reviews, focus more on the negative reviews to see how they responded. This way, you can gauge their customer engagement and quality of service. You can as well ask the company for at least two references to gain insight into their service delivery.

Guarantees and Warranties

A reputable firm such as Buffalo Electric stands by its work and can vouch for its employees. Guarantees offered by these firms are often tied to their history in the area and past work. You should aim for a team that would go to great lengths to ensure you get the best service to achieve the highest customer satisfaction.

While not many firms offer guarantees and warranties, these two are a measure of a firm’s confidence in their work. It also gives you peace of mind since you don’t have to worry about a botched job that may attract extra costs. A warranty plays a key role in the negotiations as the firm offers to handle repair and maintenance services within the period stipulated.

Visit Buffalo Electric for Exemplary Services

A commercial project is one of the most complex electrical jobs in the field hence the need for top professionals with an understanding of multiple electrical works. A botched job can be costly and, in some cases, delay the re-opening of the property. Interview and review each electrician to find the best fit for your project.

As well as handling the common problems listed below, we can also provide a complete overhaul of your home’s electrical system to bring it up to modern standards.

You Have Circuit Breaker Problems

Your circuit breaker defends your home against overloads and helps prevent short-circuiting. It interrupts the flow of electricity when an electrical fault occurs. Therefore, if your circuit breaker is continually tripped, you may have underlying electrical problems that require attention. While it’s important to keep your circuit breaker working properly to prevent fires and overheating, you’ll also want our team to inspect your system and find the underlying culprit. This may vary from poor wiring to overloaded outlets that require updating.

There’s no need to worry if you have a problem with your circuit breaker since Buffalo Electric is just a phone call away. Perhaps it happens when you’re overusing your electricity trying to catch up on laundry, while watching your favorite sport, drying your hair, cooking dinner in the oven, and running the dishwasher. Multiple large appliances running at once can trip the breaker.

Buffalo Electric will provide a thorough inspection and make recommendations to improve your power reliability.

Your Electricity Surges or Dips

It may seem counterintuitive but electrical dips and surges are closely related. Power surges come from a spike in electrical charge on the power lines. That increases the surge of energy to your outlets. It may cause your appliances to become overloaded. Meanwhile, electrical dips create brownouts or drops in voltage that may cause flickering lights or interrupt the flow of electricity throughout your home.

Repeated power surges can damage your electronics and appliances. Lightning strikes, damaged power lines and other issues can generate surgeons. If you have appliances plugged into a faulty outlet they may draw too much power from the panel, causing a momentary brownout. Having an electrical expert inspect your home can give you the answers you’re looking for. For example, we can install a whole house surge protector to deal with runaway electric surges.

Whatever is causing an unpredictable electrical supply to your home, Buffalo Electric can find and fix the problem for the safety and convenience of your family.

Your Home has Scarce or Dead Outlets

If you don’t have enough electrical outlets in your home, it’s important to make sure that your current electrical panel can handle more before installing them. While overusing outlets can lead to tripped circuits, adding more outlets without the proper training can lead to even bigger problems.

Our team can inspect your electrical system and provide recommendations and estimates on the best way to resolve your lack of outlets without creating a fire hazard. Depending on the age of your home’s electrical system, we may be able to upgrade the current wiring or we may have to install a new panel box that can handle the demands of a modern household.

Dead Outlets

If you have non-working outlets in your home, there could be deeper problems hiding in the wiring behind your walls. Our trusted electricians can examine your wiring and find out whether it’s an easy fix or requires larger updates.

Frequent Light Bulb Blowouts

Burnt-out light bulbs are typically just an inconvenience solved by a trip to the local hardware store. However, if your bulbs frequently burn out after a recent installation, it could be an issue with overheating. Our reliable, insured electricians can trace the source of the problem and resolve the issue for you.

Some Lights Are Too Dim or Too Bright

On the other end of the spectrum, you may have lights that are constantly dim no matter the wattage of the installed ball. We’ll be happy to take a look at it and see if the problem is a bad neutral connection. At Buffalo Electric, we have been keeping lights burning brightly for local homeowners for many years.

Warm Outlets or Switches and Electrical Shocks

When you touch the outlets in your home, are they warm? That could mean that you’re overloading your wiring with too many gadgets. Make sure to unplug appliances when they’re not in use to prevent fires. It’s also a good idea to spread your appliances and devices around and not to rely too heavily on one outlet.

Do you receive shocks when you touch your lamps or turn them on and off? This could be a result of faulty wiring. Discontinue using the outlet until one of our professionals has time to inspect and fix it.

High Electric Bill

High electric bills may result from faulty wiring. Unplug as many unused devices and chargers as possible to help keep your bill down. You can also turn up the thermostat in the summer or turn it down in winter to minimize the use of your heating and cooling system. If necessary, you can hire an electrical professional from a trusted company, such as Buffalo Electric, to recommend upgrades that lead to energy efficiency and lower bills.

Whether you’re experiencing these or other electrical problems, you can rely on Buffalo Electric to get to the root of the issue. Our flexible financing and commitment to affordable services can help you find a way to improve your access to electrical power without breaking the bank.

Ways In Which An Electrician Can Help You Update the Electrical Panel

Electrical panels are an essential part of any home. They primarily protect your electrical systems, meaning you must always keep them updated and take good care of them. Many electrical gadgets are housed in the panel. Sometimes, replacing the entire panel or even upgrading it might be cost-prohibitive. However, there are several updates an electrician may undertake to ensure that your panel box functions optimally. Such updates make it simpler to access the panel box and its contents, and most of them include changing the panel hardware. Below are four ways your technician can help you upgrade the panel.

Clearing Obstructions and Obstacles

Based on where your electrical panel is installed, it might have some obstacles that inhibit its access or even make the housed electrical components inefficient. For instance, if your electrical panel is installed outdoors, some shrubs, vines, or bushes in your yard could be in the way of the panel. On the other hand, objects and items may be stored near the indoor electrical panel, making it hard to reach in an emergency. Ensure that the area around the panel is clear of any obstructions and obstacles that might hinder its access.

Labeling Your Breakers

Should something happen at your home that will make the circuit breaker trip, you want to be able to flip it back to the right position. However, if all the circuit breakers aren’t labeled correctly, you will not know the parts of your home the individual breakers control. Enlisting a technician to label your breakers means you will understand what each does and the appliance it controls. This makes things a lot easier for the professional if they are doing any repairs at your home. When creating the labels, the common areas or rooms are worth mentioning, ensuring anyone can easily understand which breaker affects where. However, whenever the breaker trips, you shouldn’t rush to the panel to push it into position, especially if it’s frequent or consistent. In such instances, you should have the professional inspect the electrical wiring and the affected appliance.

Grease the Latch and Door

It could get stuck if you do not open the electrical panel often. When this happens, you might have problems restarting the breakers, possibly leading to potential injuries. Hence, you should pay attention to the door hinges and latches. Ensure the electrical panel correctly opens without slowing down or stopping. The handle or latch should pull up or even open smoothly. It shouldn’t get stuck. If you notice such problems, ensure professional greases the affected parts. While you might feel that you are in a position to do this, you shouldn’t. If the grease touches any parts of the many electrical components of the panel, you could be exposed to a risk of electrocution.

Upgrading the Circuit Breakers

The circuit breaker is one of the most important protective components housed in the electrical panel. However, there are many breakers, each with very specific applications. Like any other electrical device or gadget, the breakers also experience issues like rusting, being covered with dust, or even old age. Has your breaker been tripping for no reason? You should have an electrician inspect it. One of the updates you can make to the electrical panel is upgrading the breakers to more modern and sensitive ones.

Is Updating the Electric Panel Worth It?

The electrical panel is, in most instances, installed out of sight. As such, you might employ an out-of-sight, out-of-mind approach when it comes to its maintenance. There is a high probability that you even think of it as it sits in your basement until it trips when you use a hairdryer when another person is heating food in a microwave simultaneously. Thus, you might be astonished when you reach it, only to find it covered with dust. When the day comes that you have to upgrade or even replace it, you could be shocked by the sheer high cost. However, it is well worth every penny. It even makes more sense to have had a plan with a reliable electrical services provider for maintenance to prevent anything terrible from happening. Below are reasons why it is worth upgrading.

You’ll have a Chance to Add Extra Circuits and Outlets

Electrical works aren’t an easy feat and certainly aren’t cheap. When you improve your electrical panel, you can add more outlets so that different rooms or appliances in your house can have enough electricity. You can save money on labor by doing it all at once because the electricians can complete it much more quickly.

Increases Your Home’s Safety

Electrical fires are the second most prevalent sources of structural fires. Studies have shown that about 51,000 electrical fires in homes occur every year. Unfortunately, old electrical panels or components significantly increase your exposure to fire risk at your home. Hence, updating or upgrading the panel to industry standards ensures your family is safe.

You Get More Efficient and Consistent Power

Over the past few decades, the electricity needed to power electronic devices has changed significantly, and efficiency has played a significant role. A modern electrical system and panel allow all your appliances and outlets to get the right amount of power for your needs, reducing strain on your appliances and lowering energy costs.

Always Hire Professionals

There are many other updates that you can do to your electrical panel. However, you should always hire an electrician for a minor or major upgrade. This is even more so if the panel changes include breakers and other hardware. After inspecting the panel, the professional can tell which components should be updated or whether you need to upgrade the entire panel with a new one. Doing this protects you from the dangers such as electrocution and electrical shocks.

Do you need yours upgraded or have questions about electrical panels? Contact us at Buffalo Electric today.

Electricity and water make a dangerous combination. This is particularly applicable in our bathroom, where you use water from the shower to clean yourself and rely on electrical devices such as hair dryers and shavers. If you are not careful, you can put yourself and your family at risk of electrocution, shock, or fire. Hiring a licensed electrician is crucial to installing and repairing your bathroom electrical devices. Even if your electrical installations have complied with electrical standards, it’s up to you to ensure your safety and your family members from accidents. This article discusses tips on how to maintain safety in your bathroom.

Avoid Using Unnecessary Electrical Appliances in the Bathroom

Never use electrical appliances in the bathroom when in contact with or standing in water or on wet surfaces. This should be common sense, but sometimes people get careless or forget. Never use a portable heater or plug-in phone chargers while bathing. The problems start when you leave these appliances in the bathroom while plugged in. The moisture in the bathroom air can cause these appliances to get damaged and lead to potential electrical hazards. The best way to prevent electrocution is to keep all these appliances away from the bathroom. If you still need extra light or music, replace them with rechargeable or battery-operated devices.

Light Switches

For a bathroom, light switches should be located outside of the door. This is because they are connected to a live wire. If your hands are damp when you come into contact with the live wire, you risk severe injury and may get electrocuted. If the switch is mounted inside the bathroom, it should be mounted on the ceiling and use a cord to turn it. This is because you can get electrocuted when using a wall-mounted switch while standing in water. When installing light switches in your bathroom, hire a qualified electrician who meets all applicable safety standards.

Showerhead Heaters

Shower heaters are a convenient way to get hot showers, but they can also be a dangerous electric shock hazard. If you use a showerhead heater, ensure it is permanently wired or installed by an electrical expert. For water heaters that are not appropriately installed, thermostats can fail, causing water to become too hot. This can cause severe burns and fire risk. Never install a water heater yourself, especially if you are not trained. Many people make a dangerous mistake by mixing up live and earth wiring during installation, which may endanger your life. In such cases, getting a trained expert to install it is better.

Install GFCI-Protected Sockets

A GFCI-protected socket is a circuit breaker that automatically cuts off electric power when it senses an imbalance between incoming and outgoing current. It is an essential piece of electrical device in your bathroom to prevent electrical shocks from occurring. If a stray electric current comes into contact with human skin or water, the GFCI sockets device will automatically cut off the electricity to the outlet. GFCI outlets are safety features that are essential for all wet areas. If you have not already mounted a GFCI device in your bathroom or kitchen, make a point to contact a professional electrician to come and install it for you. This device will offer more protection in areas prone to water splashes and spillages. All electrical work must pass all required inspections and be performed by a licensed professional.

Opt for Ceiling Fan Heaters or Central Heaters

If you are considering purchasing an electric heater to cheer up your cold bathroom during winter days. You may wonder if the heater is safe for your bathroom setting. Some heaters are safe in the bathroom, provided they carry the appropriate IP rating and are installed by a trained electrical expert. All bathroom electrical appliances should also be hardwired so that they can be compliant with safety regulations. A professional will be able to assess all the loads in your home electricity supply and make suggestions accordingly. That’s why it is recommended to consult your electrical technician before choosing a heater.

Keep Electrical Appliances Out of Children’s Reach

If you must keep electrical appliances in your bathroom, ensure they are unplugged and appropriately stored away from the children, particularly razors and hair dryers. It is better to keep them in another room without water. A professional electrician can install bathroom wall sockets that can minimize the likelihood of shock when an appliance falls into the bathwater or sink.

Avoid Overusing Extension Cords

Because an extension lead can accommodate four plugs, it does not mean that you fill it up. The more you overload the plugs, the higher the electrical damage or injury risk. If you plan to blow dry or straighten your hair, only plug in one device at a time to ensure your safety. Leave your phone to charge in your bedroom. If these plugs are overloaded, the appliances can exceed the safety maximum, making them overhead and leading to fire risks. Use only one extension lead per socket. Danger signs are scorching, sparks, melting, or around an extension lead. If power automatically cuts off, then this is also a warning sign. As much as installing power outlets and sockets in the bathroom increases the risk of an electrical accident, you can require them to power various appliances. Ensure they are installed at least 3 meters from the taps and baths. This will help to keep them away from splashing water. Also, electrical sockets should be more than 300mm above the floor.

Now that you have learned essential electrical safety tips remember one more thing, never attempt any electrical repair or replacement on your own. Call a licensed electrical expert to handle your electrical wiring, circuits, and panel. If you need any electrical upgrades, replacements, or repairs, contact Buffalo Electric. We will ensure that your bathroom is safe for you and your family. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment and get started.

It’s like going to the doctor for a checkup, but for your home’s electrical system. The goal of electrician maintenance is to identify and fix potential issues before they become major problems. This helps to ensure that your electrical system operates efficiently and safely.

Why Is Electrician Maintenance Important?

Electricity is dangerous and a faulty electrical system can be a hazard to your home and your family. Regular electrician maintenance can help you avoid these dangers by identifying and fixing these issues before they become emergencies.

Benefits of Electrician Maintenance

Regular electrician maintenance is essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of your home’s electrical system. Electrician maintenance also offers several other benefits beyond preventing electrical hazards. By scheduling regular maintenance, you can also save money on your energy bills, extend the lifespan of your electrical appliances, and avoid the inconvenience of sudden breakdowns or emergency repairs. With regular maintenance, electricians can identify and fix potential issues before they become major problems, ensuring that your electrical system runs smoothly and efficiently. • Peace of Mind: Knowing that your electrical system has been inspected and serviced by a professional can give you peace of mind, knowing that your family and home are safe.

What Does Electrician Maintenance Involve?

Electrician maintenance involves a series of tasks that are essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of your home’s electrical system. One of the most critical aspects of electrician maintenance is checking electrical connections. Over time, electrical connections can become loose or damaged, which can cause electrical hazards, including sparks or fires. To prevent this from happening, electricians will inspect all electrical connections in your home to ensure that they are tightly secured and free from any wear and tear that may have occurred over time.

Another crucial aspect of electrician maintenance is testing electrical panels. These panels are responsible for distributing electricity throughout your home, so it’s essential to ensure that they are functioning correctly. Regular maintenance involves testing electrical panels to identify any possible malfunctions or worn-out parts that may need to be replaced. This can help prevent electrical issues from occurring in the future and ensure that your home is powered safely and efficiently.

In addition to checking electrical connections and testing electrical panels, electrician maintenance also involves inspecting and replacing electrical wiring and components as needed. This includes checking for loose wires, frayed or damaged wiring, and other issues that may pose a risk to the safety of your home’s electrical system.

Some electrician maintenance benefits include:

  • Inspection: A professional electrician will inspect your electrical system for any potential issues, such as frayed wires or overloaded circuits.
  • Testing: The electrician will test your electrical system to ensure that it’s operating as it should be.
  • Servicing: The electrician will service your electrical system, which could involve replacing worn-out parts, tightening loose connections, or cleaning dirty components.
  • Documentation: The electrician will provide you with a report of their findings and any recommended repairs.

Electrician maintenance is a vital part of maintaining a safe and efficient home. By taking steps, such as checking electrical connections, testing electrical panels, and inspecting and replacing electrical wiring and components, electricians can prevent potential hazards and keep your home running smoothly.

How Often Should You Schedule Electrician Maintenance?

The frequency of electrician maintenance depends on several factors, including the age of your electrical system, its usage, and its condition. Generally, you should schedule electrician maintenance once every one to two years. However, if you notice any issues with your electrical system, such as flickering lights or tripped circuit breakers, you should schedule an inspection as soon as possible.

What To Look For When Hiring An Electrician

There are many types of home repairs and upgrades that a person can perform for themselves. Electrical work does not fall into these categories. While some projects, like replacing a faulty light switch, may seem simple enough to be performed as a DIY, they shouldn’t be.

One faulty connection or undersized wire is enough to create a situation that not only places your structure at risk but all the people who enter the building in danger. This type of work should only be performed by licensed professionals. The question is, what do you look for when hiring an electrician? What questions do you ask?

Are they licensed and insured?

Any professional electrician should be fully licensed and insured. Being licensed shows that they have been properly trained and proven they have the necessary knowledge needed to perform work on electrical systems. These licenses are granted by the State Licensing Board, which is responsible for maintaining testing and education standards.

A contractor being insured protects you as a client from any mishap or damage that may occur while they are working. This can fall on two levels. One is the technician being injured on your property, and the other is them causing any damage.

People who have passed their boards and have paid to be bonded and insured will not hesitate to show you their papers. They have worked hard to receive them and are rightly proud. If a company hesitates to show you proof, look for another contractor.

What services do they offer?

A company like Buffalo Electric offers a wide variety of services for both commercial and residential property owners. This is not true of all firms. Some electrical contractors are more specialized. There are companies that only focus on industrial, residential, commercial, or control work.

It is always a good idea to make sure that any firm you talk to offers a variety of services that you may have immediate or future needs for. This eliminates the hassle of having to seek and work with multiple contractors both in the present and future. Never underestimate the value of building a relationship with the people who will play a role in the safety and security of your property.

When are they available?

A sad truth of working with people in a high-demand field is that many times there is more work than qualified people to perform it. This means that other than in emergency situations, there can be a lengthy wait to have the work you need to be performed gotten to.

If you have a specific timetable in mind for your project(s), it is best to check the scheduling availability of the company you are talking to early in your discussions. This can be especially true during prime construction periods. It is also advisable to try to plan as far in advance as you can to help assure you get the best companies to work with. As with most skill fields, the best is also normally the busiest.

Do they offer a guarantee?

Another sign of a true professional is that they will warranty or guarantee their work. Any technician worth his salt should have enough confidence in the materials he uses and their own technical skills to stand behind the work they perform.

If a contractor is not willing to back their work in writing, you should immediately be suspicious of their qualifications.

How much do they charge?

This can be a delicate subject to discuss and is one area that many consumers place too much infuses on. No electrician worth working with is going to come at bargain-basement prices. The demand for their skills is simply too high.

What trips many people up is going with the lowest possible bid. Many times this is not the bargain that it may appear to be. A technician that charges twice the rate of another may be a better deal in the long run.

An electrical tech that shows up with a van fully stocked with all the tools and parts that he may need is not going to be wasting their time and your money running to pick up this or buy that. They will arrive ready to work. Get the job done quickly and efficiently. Then move on to their next project.

Do they offer written estimates and contracts?

Related to the subject above, for any job, large or small, an electrical firm should have no issue with providing you a cost estimate up front and putting it in writing. For larger projects, there should not only be an estimate given but a contract drawn up.

This should include the contractor’s name, business contact information, an exact description of what is and isn’t included in the work, and a copy of any estimates or bids that have been given.

This is to protect both you and the contractor from any misunderstandings that might arise. A good rule of thumb in any business dealings is; if it is not in writing, it doesn’t exist. Be very suspicious of people who want to avoid putting their commitments in writing.

Did you check their references?

This one is entirely on you as a client. Have you done your due diligence before picking the electrician you want to work with? Most contractors will be more than happy to give you a list of satisfied customers you can talk to.

The smart customer will go beyond this surface investigation and look for BBB complaints and check for independent reviews online.

Importance Of Working With A Certified Electrician

Handling electrical installation and repair is not your typical DIY project since it has several risks. Local authorities in Grapevine encourage homeowners to call a certified electrician to help deal with electrical issues, from installation to maintenance and repair.

An electrical system is a complex installation that relies on panels, outlets, breakers, and wiring to supply power where needed. Attempts to handle these problems on your own, especially with little to no background in electrical installation, could result in more damage.

While there are issues you can handle, including changing a bulb or tightening a switch, it’s best to leave electrical issues to a professional. Below is an overview of the importance of leaving your electrical work to an expert.

Reasons to Hire a Certified Electrical Technician

Safety

The most important reason to get a professional for your electrical issues is safety. A Certified electrician is equipped with the necessary tools and procedures to ensure their safety and those within the work area. Aside from your physical safety, the technician is able to secure the work area to prevent further damage, preventing accidents such as electrocution or electrical fires.

Electrical installations are delicate and need to be approached with the utmost care and appropriate safety equipment. Approaching it as a DIY project not only puts you at risk but leaves you vulnerable to long-term safety hazards. No matter the scope of the work, have an expert do a full analysis and advise you accordingly.

Skills and Expertise

A certified electrical technician is trained and certified to handle multiple electrical problems. During certification, the professional is subject to several tests to gauge their skill levels to ensure they are knowledgeable and grasp concepts related to handling electricity.

Hiring a certified technician means you are working with someone who understands what they are doing. The best part is that experts leverage their experience handling different issues to offer a lasting solution to your electrical issues.

Before hiring an electrician, it’s wise to do a background check on their credentials to ensure they are licensed, insured, and rated. Online reviews can help gauge their customer engagement and service delivery, enabling you to make an informed decision.

Troubleshooting

A warning sign may alert you to an immediate issue with your electrical system. However, finding the root cause may be difficult, especially if you don’t have the necessary tools to run a full diagnosis. A professional has the tools and techniques needed to troubleshoot your issues and find the best fix for your system.

When troubleshooting, you need to understand how your electrical systems function to see how best to approach the issues. Without this knowledge, it can be frustrating forcing you to spend countless hours on a simple issue. Get a certified technician to run diagnostics on your system with little time and effort.

Saves You Money

Approaching an electrical problem as a DIY project may seem like a good way to save money instead of hiring a professional. However, what people fail to realize is that a simple mistake during installation or repairs may result in expensive repairs and replacements, forcing you to go over budget. Hiring a professional not only saves you money but time. A professional is able to troubleshoot the issue within the shortest time possible, allowing you to resume your schedule. This means you can go back to work faster.

Aside from the cost of the repairs, working with a professional gives you access to insurance coverage. This policy protects you from financial liability in case of work-related injuries or a botched job. A professional’s insurance cover will take care of labor, part, and other expenses, in case the technician is responsible for injuries or delayed completion.

Access to Permits and Adherence to Electrical Codes

Each zip code has specific building codes that apply to electrical works, including installation, maintenance, and repairs. Working with an unlicensed technician may violate electrical codes, attracting legal suits in the process. A reputable firm such as Buffalo Electric helps you stay within the law and observe all electrical work regulations.

An electrical expert is well-versed in local electrical codes and will likely tailor their work and installations to meet local requirements. A certified technician disregarding local codes risks legal action and, in most cases, may have their license revoked.

Your home insurance company may refuse to honor your claim if the expert violates any of the electrical codes.

Another advantage of working with a professional is that they can help you secure permits quickly. Electrical contractors are constantly working on a project, hence frequent local authorities for permits. This means they can secure permits for any of your electrical projects and ensure you stay within the law.

Provide Long-Term Solutions

A professional will not only focus on the problem at hand but also run a full diagnosis of your system to unearth hidden issues. An experienced technician will address the electrical issues while working with you to provide a long-term solution to the problem. Leveraging their skills and expertise, the expert is able to find the best solutions while delivering quality work, thus lowering the possibility of damage in the future.

Service and Maintenance

Electrical contractors usually keep records of their work. This includes details on installations, adjustments, repairs, and maintenance. Using these service logs, the contractor is able to understand your needs and spend a little less time troubleshooting your electrical issues.

A detailed service log is not only helpful to the contractor but is important to the homeowner. These documents explain the procedures and costs associated with the work; this way, you know what you are paying for. You can as well use this information when filing a claim from your home insurance provider.

A certified electrician is knowledgeable and has the necessary experience needed to handle different electrical works. These contractors can also help you observe laws and regulations governing electrical works, thus shielding you against legal action.

A circuit breaker will trip because of a short circuit, power surge, circuit overload, or any other electrical issue. The tripping is a good show because it confirms your breaker’s effectiveness in protecting your electronics and appliances from the damaging effects of electrical faults.

However, a circuit breaker that keeps falling whenever you plug in a device might be one of the many signs of a bad breaker, in which case you’ll have to find a licensed electrician near me to repair or replace it.

Can a circuit breaker go bad? Yes, it can. This blog will help you learn about the symptoms of a bad circuit breaker, how to identify the signs, and when to upgrade the breaker. But first, to help you understand this whole concept, you should know that a malfunctioning circuit breaker isn’t the same as a bad breaker.

So, What’s a Bad Breaker?

A properly functioning circuit breaker is a line of defense for your home and equipment during an electrical surge. However, with a breaker that has gone rogue, this would be impossible, as it won’t trip.

And this puts your home’s safety at stake. Thus, you should call up an electrician near me to fix the issue as soon as possible.

How Can I Tell If My Circuit Breaker Is Bad?

There are many warning signs to watch out for if you suspect something is up with your circuit breaker. Some of the common symptoms of a bad breaker that calls for the immediate attention of an electrician near me include:

  • Burning Smell in the Home
When a circuit breaker goes bad, the wires and insulation overheat, producing a burning smell. Try sniffing around your electrical panel to see if there’s any burning odor coming out of it. Suppose you get any sense of something burning. In that case, shut off the power supply to the house immediately and contact an electrician near me.
  • Breakers that are Hot to Touch
Are your circuit breakers hot to the touch? If yes, you’re likely dealing with a bad breaker. The hotness is caused by the same heat that brings about the burning smell. Call a qualified electrician near me for help without delay.
  • Circuit Breaker Trips Frequently
Even though frequent tripping is a sign of a faulty circuit breaker, it doesn’t necessarily mean your breaker is bad.

As already mentioned, there can be other causes of circuit breakers that constantly trip, including faulty equipment or faulty circuits. Call a professional electrician near me to understand the actual cause.
  • Worn-out or Outdated Circuit Breaker
Typically, circuit breakers have a life expectancy of 30 to 40 years; more than that, you’ll start encountering bad circuit breaker symptoms.

Again, as it’s the case with any electrical or mechanical device, your breaker will wear out with time. When this happens, lousy breaker problems may be inevitable.
  • Visibly Damaged Breaker
Overheating a faulty circuit breaker often results in noticeable damage to the panel and the breaker itself. If you observe any external damage on your electrical panel, look for other signs of a bad circuit breaker and call in an electrician near me right away.
  • Circuit Breaker Fails to Remain Reset
Does your electric breaker seem like it will not remain reset for some time? Phone an electrician near me to come and inspect it for any internal wiring issues.

Bad Breaker Testing

Electricians use a multimeter to test the current level of electric components. If yours is a single-pole breaker, the multimeter must show 120 V, while for a double-pole breaker, it should be 220 to 250 V. If there’s a slight difference, that’s not a big deal. However, a significant difference indicates a problem.

Frequently Asked Questions About Circuit Breakers

This section discusses some common and random questions people ask about circuit breakers and their answers, including;

  • Is It Common for a Circuit Breaker to Go Bad?
Yes, circuit breakers are subject to going bad. But it might be a common occurrence in some areas, and not others, depending on issues such as electricity overload or climate. The age of the device will also impact its functioning.
  • How Often Do Circuit Breakers Go Bad?
An electric breaker will often go bad once its lifespan is over. While a circuit breaker could last up to 40 years, AFCIs, GFCIs, and other standard breakers have an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

But this differs from one case to another since there might be other contributing external factors. Hence, you should stay vigilant of signs of a bad circuit breaker and have an electrician near me who will come out to diagnose and rectify the problem early.
  • How Do I Know If My Circuit Breaker Needs to Be Replaced?
A circuit breaker that keeps tripping without any electrical fault is a primary indicator of a bad breaker.

The other tale-tell signs of a bad circuit breaker include those already covered in the other section. But, you must first confirm there’s no electrical malfunction responsible for the breaker’s tripping, such as a power surge.
  • Is It Necessary to Upgrade a Circuit Breaker?
The answer is yes, it is. Updating your circuit breaker will ensure you have a suitable solution for your electrical needs. If your circuit breaker isn’t upgraded, overheating due to circuit overloads can cause electrical fires in the home.

Also, if you don’t update your breaker, it can become an impediment when selling your house. Any history of an electrical emergency, say, an electrical fire, will considerably lower your home’s value.

Electricians, or electrical technicians, have been around since the 1800s, helping homes, businesses, and institutions install, repair, and maintain their electrical systems. These professionals are experts in designing, installing, and repairing electrical wiring systems and related equipment.

Most homeowners lack the technical capacity and equipment to conduct electrical work by themselves. Instead, they turn to electrical technicians to solve issues with their electrical systems. Here are a couple of services to expect from an electrician when you hire them.

Emergency Repairs

An electrical expert is the first person that likely comes to mind when you experience a power outage, and rightly so. These experts are well-versed in handling power outages and other electrical emergencies. They’ll find the root of the problem and restore power to your home or business in no time.

An abrupt power outage is a common emergency a licensed electrician can comfortably address. However, be on the lookout for signs that could indicate a more severe electrical emergency. These include a burning smell, sparking and smoke from your outlets, and a noisy brake.

Turn off the main power supply and call an electrical expert the moment you notice any of these signs. You could have a serious problem with your wiring that puts you at risk of electrocution and your home at risk of an electrical fire.

Upgrading Your Electrical Systems

Household and commercial electrical systems need frequent upgrades to meet the power demands of modern technology. Not only are these old systems obsolete and inefficient, but they also pose a safety risk to you and your family. An electrical technician will help you upgrade to a better electrical system and safeguard your safety.

Here are a few telltale signs that you need to upgrade your electrical system:

  • Your lights keep flickering
  • Burning from the outlets
  • Discolored outlets with visible burn marks
  • A tiny shock when touching electrical appliances

A licensed electrician will recommend what electrical system you should upgrade to and proceed with the upgrade. An electrical system upgrade might involve upgrading electrical fixtures, improving the circuit breaker, and upgrading your electrical panels.

Maintaining Your Electrical System

Electrical systems are predisposed to deterioration with time. A qualified electrician helps maintain this system to keep it in great shape. Thai regular inspections and servicing identify potential issues with your electrical system and address them before they get out of hand.

During this inspection, the technician will check crucial touchpoints of your electrical system:

  • The outlets
  • Circuit breakers
  • Appliances
  • Lighting fixtures
  • Surge protectors

Regular inspections and maintenance help prevent major problems with your electrical system down the line. It also helps your appliances run more efficiently and eliminates the risk of electrocution and other safety hazards.

Installing Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Smoke detectors are mandatory for all single-family and rental units in Texas. An electrician will install wired smoke detectors in your home or business. These are better than battery-powered detectors since they’re more affordable and have a more reliable power source.

They’ll also interconnect the detectors with your alarm system, so you get alerted the moment they detect smoke in the house. Modern smoke detectors are equipped with wifi technology to send alerts straight to your phone in case they go off. That way, you can save your house from a potential fire.

Repairing the Circuit Breaker Panel

The circuit breaker panel distributes power to the rest of your home. These panels are prone to malfunction due to ground faults or overloaded circuits. An electrician will examine the cause of the malfunction and either repair or replace the panel, depending on the severity of the issue.

Installing and Repairing Generators

The average American experienced about 7 hours and 20 minutes of power outages in 2022. This doesn’t sound like much, but this period is enough to run some businesses to the ground. Backup generators come in handy to provide an uninterrupted supply of power in case of power outages.

An electrical technician will help find the right size and type of generator for your home and business. The electrical expert will install the generator and conduct frequent repairs and servicing to ensure you never miss power during a blackout.

Installing Indoor and Outdoor Lighting

Electrical technicians are perfectly capable of installing your indoor and outdoor lighting. A well-lit home is comfortable and creates an inviting atmosphere for guests. Outdoor lighting helps highlight your home’s exterior features and enhances curb appeal.

Lighting fixtures require different amperages and other specifications to work as they should. An electrical expert ensures the lighting meets your expected standards and falls in line with local building codes.

Ceiling Fan Installation

Ceiling fans are especially important during hot summers, helping your AC system keep the house cool and comfortable. They help reduce your reliance on your AC and your energy spending since they don’t use as much electricity as your AC.

While it’s best to leave HVAC installation to HVAC professionals, a licensed electrician is more than capable of installing ceiling fans. They’ll also recommend the best positions for these ceiling fans to improve your home’s air circulation. If you already have ceiling fans, these technicians will address fan issues like slow oscillations, flickering lights, and rattling.

Electrical System Upgrades for Larger Appliances

Older homes may not meet the electrical demands of larger appliances like dishwashers and washing machines. You need to upgrade your home’s internal wiring to accommodate these appliances. An electrical technician will help you do just that to have the best home appliances and devices.
